Freddie really did sound amazing on that tour.

I had heard that from a friend of mine who saw him live during that time (he said he always sounded great but, for some reason, REALLY great during the Hot Space tour) and the release of the DVD only proved that.

I can see why that might be true. Freddie was in his late 30's by the Hot Space tour, so was at the peak of his powers. Voices also get deeper as people get older and lose a bit of range, and I don't notice any of that with Freddie until about 1985. Not sure when Freddie started smoking either. But that tends to change the timbre of the voice after a while too. For some it adds quality and character. But I don't think that would have been the case with such a brilliant instrument as Freddie's.

Freddie started smoking in 1979/1980, mainly because he needed something to do with his hands when he talked, but also (I believe) because he wanted to add that huskiness to his voice.

...I must be the only one who hates Staying Power live.

It's really a mess of a song. It's bearable on the album mix. The only thing that comes through is the "power! Power! Power! Etc" break.

Had they done a different arrangement I could see it being better. Say for instance; getting the tower of power brass section to do the part that is replicated on synth bass.

If you do THAT ... THEN you've got ta "a spicy pizza!"

I CAN however feel a turning rhythm to the song that might have given influence to Michael and his posturing but the song itself is a mess. Like Spinal Taps free form jazz odyssey (and puppet show)

I DO like the bootlegs though. Hopefully the Inglewood or New York shows get a release
"Come tonight! Come see the Overbite! Come to Ogre Battle, FIGHT!"

It is great to hear, but unfortunately I am tired of waiting for anything other than the same old stuff repackaged. I will cherish what I have in the bootleg collection, in the meantime I am off to Muse. Least Queen could do is release whatever video they have in the quality it is. Fans will watch it.

I keep hearing about this band Muse, I have one album from them , and it's pretty good, but not the great band people claim..I Have "Revelations" I was watching The Wembly show a few nights ago for the first time in a few years, and never realized how husky Freddie's voice was in that show..He never could have sang Somedody to love and Play the game that night...He still had plenty of great moments though in a more operatic style...

If you had only heard Hot Space or The Game and nothing else you're view of Queen would be very limited and somewhat different to someone who has heard more of there music.

Muse are not a band you can decide upon on hearing one album or without seeing them live. They are a stunning band, who in many ways have taken the type of things Queen were doing on Queen 2 and taken it to a different level.

As for Freddie not being able to sing SBTL or PTG had they been part of the 86 set list. You really need to listen again to what he was doing with that voice in those shows, husky or not.

[/QUOTE] I'll check out more of their music, Like I said, I do like them, and I heard other songs from different albums as well....They just seem like a good band, nothing more IMO...not on the level of Queen and other classic rockers...As far as The Magic tour, I heard shows throughout the tour, and maybe you're right, he could have done those songs, though maybe a bit rougher than the The Game/ Hot space Tours....I never said I didn't like his wembly voice...The Magic tour was a good one for Freddie, Not his best, but still good. My favorite live Freddie is 80 to 82, then 74 (rainbow era) then 86 magic tour....

Muse is kind of like Queen, better live than studio music. In my opinion, the best stadium band since Queen/Guns&Roses days.

What I alway's loved about Queen is the fact that their studio sound is so different from the live sound....Not many Bands could pull that off...So, The studio stuff is what got me into the band in the first place, but the live stuff I come to apprerciate over time and I like equally, or at times even more than the studio...

Agreed 100%. Muse are, by far, the most interesting rock band in the world right now. The way they have been incorporating various styles of music into what they do is no different from what Queen were doing when they were at their creative peak in the mid 70s.

Black Holes And Revelations is my favourite record of the last 15 years.
