It's tongue in cheek. Kind of like the "fifth Beatle" idea, of which there were many..

At last, this sounds like a good reason. Where'd you hear this?

Someone who I know was working on the tour. My understanding is that he walked.
I can only imagine how much those guys had to rehearse to play their own tunes.
Apparently they relied quite heavily on Spike knowing different parts at the start of the 84 rehearsals

Was he not afraid of flying, so they had to replace him for different tours?
spot on mate. he cycled everywhere. he's just this minute arrived in Tokyo for the 1985 tour :-)
brENsKi, stop bullying me. I'm sick of you constantly victimizing me and I'm going to get the internet police involved, because they have time to sympathise with a whiney cunt on a fan website. They'll leave you crying behind your keyboard!!

Actually its got to be difficult going on tour with an established group like queen. The fans get used to the familiar four piece and then some new guy turns up. It must be tricky not to overstep the mark and muscle in on the action to much. I could imagine it wouldnt be hard to upset a hardcore fan base like that. I remember my friend going to one of the magic shows and all he could talk adout was how anoying the backup musician was in htf solo! Ha spike is awsome !
