Well the chart position is fucking good compared to where Queen have been charting with pretty much anything from the last 10 years, and is more in line with releases from their heyday, than current releases.

The position might be good, but it doesn't say anything about the sales numbers.
These days you get to number 8 if all the fans (a few thousands people) buy the album on the first week, whereas the same amount of sales would have gotten you to number 38 back in 70's.
It's all relative, and you can choose to see it as positively as you like...

Robert Plant blows raw monkey.
(sorry, just felt the need to share that with all of you...)

Guys, I think some of you don't get it, sorry :-) Of course, sales are nowhere near as good compared to Queen's heyday, but chart positions STILL matter. I bet Robert Plant didn't sell as many records as, e.g. Noel Gallagher did in his first week, but it still doesn't matter. Sales are bad for EVERYONE nowadays and I do think "Rainbow's" initial position is a fantastic sign indeed. It means that people actually do want something else than rehashed versions of Magic shows. And it means Queen is actually quite big these days, because it's still a low-key release, absent of many well-known hits like BoRhap or Radio or Thing Called Love. I hope the band will get the message and release more interesting stuff.

Care to substantiate that with some kind of semi-intelligent commentary on his diverse work of the past two decades?

As for the chart position - this is excellent news.
To dismiss this because of the general decline of physical record sales demonstrates a lack of basic understanding of mathematics, since chart positions are still a matter of relativity to all other record sales, however many or few there are overall.

i stand by my comment:
"CR is no benchmark for ANY kind of comparison. Secondly. sales figures will be what measures the success - not it's initial chart position."
as a whole - that statement is accurate. TCR is NO comparator and sales ARE what counts.
But let's go with TCR as a comparator: no8 vs no9 first week chart position says nothing.
the respective sales of each are what would bear the argument out. for example TCR no9 could have outsold Rainbow no8 by 2 to1...or on the other hand Rainbow no8 could have outsold TCR no9 by 5 to 1 - without the sales figures we don't know...so it's a meaningless comparison to make

I think what you also have to bear in mind is that there are multiple versions of the concert/s being released.
There is the 1 disc and 2 disc CD versions - now I'm not sure if this album chart position is taking into account sales of both albums? I'm sure most fans will pay the little extra to get the 2 CD version anyway as it's only a couple of quid/dollars extra.
Then there is the DVD and the blu-Ray releases. In Germany I think music video sales are put together with album sales when album charts are compiled - in the UK, US and probably every other country they will be included in the music video charts.
Then of course there is the comprehensive boxset package. This will probably sell well to collectors and (if it does chart) will show up somewhere in the album charts - I think the Freddie 10CD boxset did chart somewhere in the top 200 album chart in the UK in 2000.
Charts matter of course but as some have said sales matter more and revenue even moreso. With all these different products QP should see healthy revenue even if sales are only 'OK'. Costs for producing a live album will, of course, be less then doing a full studio album but looking at the presentation of the CDs, boxsets, etc I'm glad to see QP have gone to quite a lot of expense to ensure the product is good. Remastering the sound and all the technical stuff will have cost QP as well but with this selling well in countries throughout the world they'll see a nice profit.
I'm sure though, this is more aimed at the long-term fans with QP hoping it might entice a few casuals as well. 'Queen Forever' will be the big money release though - I'm sure a lot more money will be spent on this - more on the marketing and promotion side - their record company will definately expect it to sell well to Joe Public.

Beingin the top ten is not impressive this years, for the poor sales...Mars volta were 8 in usa with some record, and they seld the first week like 25.000 copies.
Only being one, and sometimes even being 1 is not too much copies

Just had a look at official charts and it seems Queen missed out on the Top Ten, landing at no. 11 eventually. What a shame!!

For a live album of very few songgs that everybody meets, 11 is a good position!

well, given how the music charts work these days, I consider num. 8 is EXCELLENT for a ´74 gig, with long-hair / no moustache Freddie, no WWRY/WATC, no AOBTT, no RGG nor IWTBF, etc etc.
Besides, Robert Plant nailed it with his new record. I absolutely love it.

I believe I already acknowledged that, and put my comment in context.

not if it either
a) didn't sell enough, or
b) wasn't released in time to generate enough sales, or
c) is classified in such a way as it doesn't qualify - is it a DVD only release?

1.) Rainbow isn't position 8 in UK charts, it's only 11
