doesn't exactly pale does it ? - yes N.Ire was a great result but Greece are hardly world champions are they? 54 places difference in FIFA rankings - a giant killing (of sorts)
But Ireland got a great result in Germany 61 places above them in rankings - and World Champions to boot.

We beat Germany home and away the last time we were in the same group as them for the Euros. We are the only team ever to have done that. They are easy peasy :p

No cpmment on the politics of that but I will never support anyone except Northern Ireland and there's no evidence that one all-island team would be more successful than two separate teams. Would a UK team be better than England for example? Would it get support from anyone except England fans?
Anyway, looking forward to the Romania-NI game next month, which is (incredibly) shaping up to be the group decider.

all i was saying is that it will happen. think about it logically. the country was once as one, it can return to one.
at present the population of Northern Ireland is a 48/52 split between in favour of unionists or protestants. but this "gap" has been reducing year by year. When you factor in the fluidity of British politics, the devolution of central Govt over recent decades and N/Ireland's current perceived power-sharing, then things can change further. Who knows what the outcome of a "Scottish-style" referendum in say, 20 years' time?
Let's face it, when the British Govt renege on their pre-referendum promises to the Scottish people, I'd wager that Scotland will demand a re-referendum.

Actually, the latest info I've seen suggests a signficant minority of catholics support the union. It;s a mistake to think all catholics are nationalist (and conversely, all protestants are unionist).

I get your point. Ireland should, from a purely logical and disinterested point of view, be one nation, that's undeniably so. However, the division is so many generations old that it just isn't resolved by changing some lines on the map to reflect the reasonable alternative. That totally sucks, because it implies that a significant number of people don't like change for the better anymore than they like change for the worse. I really do feel I have history on my side when I say that, injust as it is, these things need to be resolved gradually. I do hope that, in the course of the 21st century, a European spirit will come to replace nationalist sentiments. That would, I feel, do a lot to resolve tensions throughout Europe.
If, to reflect on your statistics for a moment, an electoral majority arises for absorbing Northern Ireland into the Republic of Ireland at any point, whether in a few years or many, that will only settle one superficial part of a conflict that will continue if its causes aren't remedied.

The island of Ireland has two nations on it, one identifying with the South and the other identifying with UK heritage (and a growing minority whose primary identity is "Northern Irish", which is somewhere in the middle, and is how I would identify myself). Ireland was not one nation split in two by the horrid Brits and even if a case could be made for that, it's no longer true. Until people realise that then they will never really understand anything about NI.
Anyway .... football. Aristotle, Socrates, Alexander the Great, err... Telly Savalas, your boys took a hell of a beating! Vlad the Impaler is next.
