Seems reasonable, it won't fit in an overhead, you'd be nuts to put it in the hold, and First Class is no doubt where he was sitting.
That thing is worth incalculably more than £10,000.

Isn't this one of those 'urban legend' things that gets told about pretty much every famous guitar player? I remember hearing the same story about BB King years ago.....

The Red Special is a very unique guitar, I dont find it unusual,in fact I think Pete Malandrone said he carries it even on planes.
Now, about BB King, I dont know that story but I can tell you that I had a very Spinal Tap moment with him about 10 years ago (maybe more)
I was in a M&G with him and my friends (Im not his fan, I dont even like his music at all, but my friends love him) and he had his guitar, he placed it over a stand or something like that, and evey time someone would be about 2 or 3 meters close to the guitar he would go like "Please, get away from the guitar"

^ it's sensible not to want anyone to touch the guitar. Someone could swipe it. Nick it. Ding it. Snap it's neck if it falls (arch top) etc.
Hell... I'm not even a great guitarist but I don't even like people touching MY guitars. (I have 3 "go to" guitars with special artwork I've made for two, Steve Lukather signature on the other)
ONE reason. (Aside from Gibson Les Paul's having dangerously weak headstocks) lies in people's SWEAT.
Yes SWEAT.
I don't generally let other people play my go to's because some people have horribly sweaty hands. The acidity of it can ruin a set of new strings quickly. Think of the neck ffinish as well!
It's just easier than ruining my comfort and ease of playing and it saves me from getting angry and saying "what the fuck did you do to my guitar? It's all sticky and disgusting! " I can't even slide my hand up the neck. ..you gotta get me something to clean this shit off! Hurry!
What the fuck! DO YOU SWEAT POTATO CHIPS?
Are you a LARD ass?!!
Etc.
It really isn't so much of a "quirk" of mine. It's just self explanatory if you play. On the other hand. I've heard guys like Jaco Pastorius and James Jamerson played with greasy fingers

Oh. And the OTHER REASON is because "it's MY fucking guitar" it's special. It's somewhat unique and I don't want anybody else messing with it's mojo

Oh no, its not my intention! I just used this situation to pinpoint that having Brian paying a lot of money for a ticket is not as weird as some people may think.
And while I understand about King's concert about his guitar, I will never forget how he reacted when someone would be "close" to the guitar..
