If I recall correctly, a similar effect was used on Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon as well.

The difference being the vocal from Sunday Afternoon was recorded the way it is heard on the album whereas its likely that an untampered vocal from Lap of the Gods is on a tape somewhere gathering dust

I think they were going for the "old acetate 72 style of ballroom recording sound" schmaltzy, old and romantic. Like listening to a monophonic grammaphone
