Re-discover Queen

Hi guys,
I'm new here (though have been lurking for a while, and liking Queen for >20 years),
and I heard you guys eat newbies for breakfast, so I'm ready ^^

When I first knew Queen back in 90s, it was only through their hits as those were the only available ones in my country. Queen became one of my favourites among The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple,... (boring expected list you might say). I knew very little about their personal life, cause for me music was all that matter in a musician's life.

But then, this year, when I attended a work orientation talk, the speaker listed several celebrities whose their lives and jobs didn't go as they first intended at all, among them I was most impressed with Brian May purchasing astronomy at first. It inspired me to open youtube and explore more of Queen's songs and wow! It just blew me away. I didn't know that Queen could rock so hard.

My current obsessed tracks are the kind of Stone CC, Ogre Battle and Seven SOR. But I also love their ballads such as All Deadx2, Save Me, 39. Interesting one, that 39, I have never heard a song about the theory of relativity that sounds so melodic yet so simple and profound. "For many a lonely day sailed across the milky seas... Your mother's eyes from your eyes cry to me": summing up all the emotions of Interstellar movie into one phrase.

I still think music is all that matter in a musician's life, but as the musician poured so much of heart and soul into his music, so a peep into his mind would be helpful for the listener.

I have been enjoying you guys' posts in here, especially some with keen musical knowledge. I hope you continue, even though this forum seems to have some technical problems, and now and then there're some trolls having fun.

I'm buying several Queen's CD and DVD from amazon, the Rainbow 1974 is just heaven.

Everytime I listen to Queen now I discover something new that I haven't noticed before. They have so many layers and cover such a wide range of styles / subgenres. How can you do waltz like The Millionaire Waltz ? It is so strange yet beautiful. Glad to have them around for my long tiring unproductive days ^_^

thank you for the welcome^^ I'm a Tolkien fan too (I hope you wouldn't think that I mentioned the "fan" term too easy. When I count myself as a "fan" I would invest a lot of time and energy for the subject and, usually, get really emotionally attached.) Right now I have to rant about Queen and there's no one around me interested in them, so here I am :)

I've read LOTR books and The Hobbit. I love them. Can't call myself a proper fan though - I don't have nearly as much knowledge about the books. Haven't read The Silmarillion either. LOTR was definitely the best thing I've read in my life, I was most excited reading it.

Great to have someone with 2 common interests with me!

I have read The Silmarillion, it's great but in my opinion can't compare to LOTR, so you don't miss much. Tolkien is my main source of english learning (his writing is so elegant and epic), other than the obvious rock bands listed above.

So naturally I'm very interested in the fantasy stuff of Queen, such as Rhye, Orgre Battle, The Prophet's Song (I dig this one, can't imagine how underrated it is).

Lots of good stuff there, especially if you're just getting into Queen (or re-discovering, as in your case). Queen were also an excellent live band.

I agree that they are monsters in Live. Though they made lots of mistakes live (who doesn't?) but the sheer energy they emitted can shoot anybody to Mars !
Watching Freddie singing AND playing piano, Brian thrashing and ukulele-ing, Roger drumming and backing up vocals like a diva, John ballading his bass line as steady as a stallion, is such a bliss.

Welcome Hobbit in rhye. Nice to see clever guy around. And yes Im a Tolkien "fan" also.

If You have the money just buy the first 8 álbums. that Queens prime. My favorite era is the first 6 records, but Jazz and the Game were good as Well.

Download some unofficial concerts: Newcastle 1979, Knebworth 1986, Sun City 1984, St. Paul 1980 corrected video by Chief Mouse, Houston concert (The Millionaire Waltz live) and check Gregsynthbootlegs YouTube channel (there he uploads live Queen concerts).

And finally, check the link down this text (there you have unreleased songs like Silver Salmon, Polar Bear, Face It Alone, and out takes of known songs).

You mean LOTR being as a rehash of The Hobbit? Not sure if that's a good comparison. I personally enjoyed LOTR way more than The Hobbit but each to their own ;)

@mike hunt: Yeap, I'm gradually doing that. So far all Queen's albums have hit and miss to me, but boy when they hit it they did it good~~

@ BETA215: Greeting, and thank you for the detail list of must-check. Those are lots of stuffs to indulge in. I have yet to look at the unreleased songs but you have a great collection there :)

By the way, are you against the films? (LOTR and Hobbit.) I love both those books and movies, though the movies are quite different but I think they are well-made in their own merit.

@ Chief Mouse: me too, I enjoy LOTR much more than Hobbit. Hobbit is like when Tolkien was still finding his voice.
LOTR happens when he found it and boom it to the max.

Absolutely not against the LOTR films, they are masterpieces, loved them -its just that I found the books a bit plodding, where as the hobbit book seemed a more cohesive, to the point story, easier to read.
