Decay of early CD pressings :(

Hi folks, I was about to remove some stuff in my house and some unwanted surprise comes along. I´ve found two Queen CD`s (Greatest Hits / A Kind of magic) with massiv signs of decay. Ok to be fair right from the start, the storage wasn`t optimal but not THAT bad.
Anyone with similar problems especially with Queen CD`s ?

Err, no. Checked the 'Magic" CD plus a few others (all purchased in the late 80's) and well, they actually look pretty good I have to say.

^Ding...and that`s annoying me, I ´ve got a lot CD´s from the late 80`s - early 90`s period and they still look good.

It's happened to me. I've had most of my cds in plastic 32qt elongated storage bins. Everything seemed fine until one time I got to pulling out my POLICE collection after listening to Reggata de Blanc on an lp player.

I opened up the first ZENYATTA MONDATTA and was horrified. Then I looked at the three others and the double disc live album.

It had been as if I'd MISTED them and left them out to dry in the sun. Pages were SEALED together, the inserts were stuck to the jewel cases and the cds often had pieces of the inserts stuck on them. Both the inner and back slips were stuck to the jewel cases.

And I'd had them protected and isolated. They all had at least 130 other cd neighbors in my collections per case. None of those were destroyed like this. And they were all in the same place.

I later noticed this same thing happened to my REMASTERED (first remaster) ozzy osborne cd NO MORE TEARS.

It was pancaked together like the police cds.

Maybe it's got something to do with the companies that pressed the prints. They were a little slick and shimmery but thin.

I haven't had problems like that with any other cd pressings that I know of since.

I had to throw away my GH3 CD years ago because of the same problem. And that one was released in 1999 !

The same thing happened to my Live at the Bowl and the Live at Wembley DVDs. I had to re-purchase them. I re-purchased the old Wembley DVD because of the bonus section with the 4 individual videos of each of the band members.

I know a lot of CDs have had problems with the glue used in the card inserts reacting with the plastic cases to damage some CDs. I think in the last couple of years the glue was changed so maybe this won't happen from now on. I've lost a couple of cd singles (not Queen but on Parlophone) the same way.

Ah ^ that's right!

I've got plain white label cd singles from Prince that suffered the same fate.


Considering how rare they were/are. .. I was really pissed

All of my CD's (most from early 90's, not 80's, I'm not as old as you guys lol) are in perfect conditions. I've gotta say the storage it's clean and the moist in the air is balanced. Plus I got 'em in vertical position and I think that's the best position to store a CD.

strange, I knew of this problem related to CDR, but I didn't think that even original CDs could lose data
I'm so scared of that, then I will avoid to check them! :)

Yes of course it`s a good way to storage media. But in my case
storage space in very good quality is limited. I also have some Vinyls, CD´s ( not just Queen), VHS and Books, Magazines to deal with.
Even one huge box of MC´s and Videogames from the 80/90`s.
I look for proper storage for all these things...but in case of flawish glue or something, it is like it is I guess.

I think it's related to the sealing of the discs. Old pressings are more prone to that, then they changed the sealing a bit I think and it happens less often. With CD-Rs, I had problems with a new batch of cheaper unbranded discs, burned about 20 or so or more (for me and a friend) and 3 months later they were all purple/pink and unplayable, of course. Never had this happen with known brands.

My parents' original GH copy still looks (and plays) fine without problems :)
