Okay. Never listened to any of his albums in full, but there are some songs I like.
Don't forget my collection of demos and outtakes: http://goo.gl/uQARhn PM me if you want any [leaked] multitrack. Ya se ven los tigres en la lluvia.

therein lies a conundrum.

Nirvana = good
Nirvana legend > Nirvana
music media hype/bullshit > actual fact

one actual fact:
there were at least five other bands at that time who did the same thing (or similar) sooner and/or better than KC's lot

Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Mother Love Bone and Pearl Jam

^ Pearl Jam was formed after Nirvana (1990 vs. 1987). Members of PJ, though, were members of seminal bands like Green River and Mother Love Bone, which existed before Nirvana.

And to answer the question, Nirvana's one of my favorite bands.

^^ oops, I missed the "and/or" part, sorry ;)

About PJ being better than Nirvana, well it's up to anyone's taste. I like PJ a lot (saw them live 3 times), they used to be one of my favorite bands before they released that "Avocado" album but I still like Nirvana better. It's possible that my opinion on both bands would be reversed if Kurt hadn't died and started releasing bad albums; and Eddie Vedder had committed suicide, ending PJ, which wouldn't have released albums anymore. So, yeah, in that sense, the legend is bigger than the band.

Bullshit man!

90's:
Milli Vanilli
Soundgarden
Alice in chains
ozzy 's last good album
animaniacs
Pinky and the brain
the last breaths of TMNT
the last breaths of NES
the first two good Batman films
the last great CAST of SNL
George Michael's FAITH
A few good Duran Duran albums
made in Heaven was released
guns and roses did their last epic Tour

Plenty other reasons but I'm just mentioning the popular culture stuff.

I'd also mention Michael Jackson's History. It's a good album.

Also, Radiohead.

^totally.

It was sore and spur of the moment. HISTORY is actually his best most personal album if you asked me. It's a damn shame I passed on it all those years because it was stuck onto a (in my eyes) WORTHLESS GREATEST HITS ALBUM.

Of course. . Facing his situation I think the attending GH album was to increase sales. He's a neurotic like most great artists

I also forgot to mention JUDAS PRIEST: PAINKILLER (*arguably their last GREAT album)

PANTERA.
MEGADETH : COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION/YOUTHANASIA

Manowar : THE triumph of steel (their best album next to HAIL TO ENGLAND)
DIO: STRANGE HIGHWAYS
THE SIMPSONS (*ITS GREATEST PEAK seasons 1-12)
GET A LIFE (*THE ORIGINAL anti sitcom)
THE END OF GOLDEN GIRLS AND NIGHT COURT

CHEERS.

Public enemy.
It could go on for a while.

Some people even love SAVED BY THE BELL. .. FRESH PRINCE. .. PRINCE ROGERS NELSON 'S last albums for Warner and his great others THE GOLD EXPERIENCE, OLD FRIENDS FOR SALE, EMANCIPATION. ..

there's also THE OFFSPRING AND GREEN DAYS BEST ALBUMS

THE emergence of the harlots of pop fame

Christina Aguilera, Mandy Moore and Britney (*it'd be years before sexy ass Mandy Moore won by default; respectable acting career, wasn't trash)

There's also films ... but none I can remember now

Nirvana legend aside, it's a very, very interesting band. The way they crystallise catchy tunes from somehow simplified chords and melodies. Simplicity is a beauty of its own (not to confuse it with cheap lazy products). Kurt Cobain's drawings and bizarre philosophy is also his legacy. The rawness and the anger from their music is genuine and uncomparable. It's impossible to enjoy Nirvana's songs from an armchair critics' POV, they'll miss the point. Their songs are often considered as for rebellious youth, it's true but it's not their only virtue.

I don't know if they are a "great" band, it's difficult to say that for such a short lived band. But they are one of my favorite bands. They can be looked upon like a shining meteor who hits the atmosphere and burn. Kurt's life literally burnt after he hit fame.

Their full albums are worth a listen to, if you haven't. They are not only Smell like Teen. Kurt wasn't always screaming: "Something In The Way" is a really emotional song. And despite their loudness, their music goes the melodious way. Metal fans frequently critic Nirvana for being too melodic.

Kurt obviously is a fan of Freddie Mercury.
