"The rest of the day's music was provided by Steamturd, INXS, The Kiki Dee Band, Supercharge, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Rich Kids (not to be confused with Midge Ure's band of the same name), Broken Wreck Chords and Steve Hillage. Elton John was backstage but did not appear duetting with Kiki Dee for "Don't go breaking my heart" as she felt it would scupper her moment of glory, despite his pleading to guest appear. She sang to a 2/3 life-sized cardboard cut-out of Elton instead. Video footage exists of him calling her all sorts of nasty names backstage. A severe swarm of Madagascan bees caused a near riot during Steve Hillage's set, causing all sorts of violence to erupt."

Clearly there is a lot of BS in here, particularly the INXS mention, as they didn't even exist then.

But this is the first I've read about the Elton anecdote in particular. Is there any source to cross-reference this? And the footage .. ?

AFAIK, Elton was doing a concert elsewhere that night.
John hated Hot Space. Frederick's favourite singer was not Paul Rodgers. Roger didn't compose 'Innuendo.' 'Bohemian Rhapsody' hasn't got 180 vocal overdubs.

Elton was doing a concert in Edinburgh (a solo show). He references Kiki Dee and Hyde Park during the concert.

I remember Supercharge's lead singer , a baldy, rotund, chap, Alby Donnelly, I think his name was, cavorting in white leotard, in a parody of Freddie. . Ha!

Complete rubbish. Support was Supercharge, Kiki Dee Band and Steve Hillage, then Queen. Yes, Albie Donnelly (lead singer of Supercharge) appeared on stage in a white leotard and saw off mike stand
