The 'Now I'm Here' clip has a different audio to the normal version, different lead/backing vocals...[/QUOTE]

It sounds like a different recording altogether to me. As well as different vocals, the guitar is heavier, there's no high pitched squealing sound, and there are some different bits in the drums. Maybe they did a complete 'retake' for the TOTP version, like they did with GOFLB?

Perhaps they did this to make it easier to mime to? I seem to recall the BBC (or the musicians union) had some restrictions about miming but I cant recall what they were. Did some parts of a song need to be performed live. I think Paul Simon got into some trouble because someone was pretending to play a flute in a TotP performance and it wasn't the original performer.

Agreed, at the very least the backing was remixed, but it does sound like a completely different recording.

I'm not sure about this but I'm sure I heard somewhere that although TOTP was lip synced artists (for a short period in the 70's) had to re record the song because of either BBC union or musicians union rules.

This also happened on Good old Fashioned Lover Boy, where we've ended up with an interesting version on DVD

I agree. Seems like they did the same thing with NIH.

Bingo. So that makes three studio versions.

Keep Yourself Alive is still in the lead with four ;)

I heard it was simply a case of TOTP wanting artists to record new versions of songs so that the viewers would think it was live. If that's the case, then somehow Queen got away with only doing it twice - NIH and GOFLB.

Yeah I think it was something like that.

I believe they got away with SSOR as they were a last minute additional so didn't have the time to re record.
There is the story of KQ where the BBC people went to see Queen pretending to do the final mix of the TOTP version, then swapping it for the original.
And if the truth be known, I think this rule went a long way in Queen recording the video for BoRap. Could you imagine having to go into the studio to re record that just for TOTPs. Sod that, let's just make a video!

I'm pretty sure in the old days on TOTP the unions insisted that all artists performing in the studio had to re-record the track for broadcast. Even so the NIH clip was interesting and in good condition considering. For a moment I thought they were going to show it in it's entirety, but no such luck.

There was a lot of old interviews we've seen before mixed in with a few new ones. It looked odd to see Brian and Roger aging and then getting younger!
The recent interviews of Roger and beard were like watching Santa Claus/Captain Birdseye!

Worth a watch, but not the best Queen doc i've seen.

And 'mad Friday' is most definatley a British invention and doubt it would export well to America. Maybe Ireland, Germany and Holland though!

Surprised nobody's yet talked about the alternate (instrumentally mixed) studio take of "Polar Bear" playing in the background! That's remarkable since that's the first time ANY Queen version of that song has featured on an official documentary or official product of any kind.

^ It has been mentioned in another thread. Yeah, there's a complete remix of that in the doc. Maybe the song will get an official release one day?
