In Friends will be friends, the lyrics are
'So the pound has dropped and the children are creating,'
What does this mean?

It means that the value of the British pound had decreased compared to foreign monetary units. In essence, it makes the British pounds in your wallet worth less. In other words: bad news.

Also 'Children are creating' means 'someone' is causing a fuss, or arguing/fighting

"The pound has dropped " is a euphemism for sexual intercourse........and consequently, "the children are created ".
Simples.

And a few verses later...
"Got a pain in the chest
Doctors on strike what you need is a rest
It's not easy love, but you've got friends you can trust"
At least everything clear there.

Was it expected that the pound always dropped at the time of writing this song?

Freddie liked to use a lot of metaphors, didn't he?
Perhaps someone should make a thread about it.
