Is this a common saying over there or something John and Fred came up with? What, precisely, does it mean and is it meant to be taken literally? Hoping to hear it's not being left with a boner. Cheers!

The lyrics of "Friends" have an aura of mystery, but they are definitely about AIDS.

k-m, why are you still here? You never get tired of trying to troll?

Yeah, I forgot that everything he ever wrote was about aids!
Thanks for the answer, Martin.

Just to play the devils advocate of course :)
Taking all the cash and leaving you with the lumber.
^(all of Freddie`s "friends" who participate of his generosity...in every way)
Got a pain in the chest,
^( now he`s sick / HIV / AIDS)
Doctors on strike...
^ (Complaining about the fact, that at that point, a lot of doctors didn`t treat those patients )
...what you need is a rest
^ (no euphemism there, he simply needs a rest because of that fucked up situation)
Well I could go on, but i don`t want to waste my time ;)

nevermind the dumbfucks.
lumber has many meanings... the usual is sawed up trees, etc
however it can also mean useless furniture, or furniture that takes up space, etc... AS WELL AS ... a burden of responsibilities...
so the line "Taking all the cash and leaving you with the lumber" just means that the "other person" took all the "Cash" or useful items in a household... and left the other with whatever was left or useless as we well as any responsibilities that you normally wouldn't want to have - ie. paying the bills...
not quite Keats - but hey Queen never were known for their lyrics.
ask better questions - like - what Brian really meant when he said "now you got soup in the laundry bag" [obviously a direct link to Freddie then dying of AIDS... but there must be a double meaning!!!]

^DNA soup. Dirty sheets and linen. That one's easy. It's been covered in a separate thread "queen's raciest lyric" or something like that.
Headlong is full of suggestive stuff: even the title is phallic

He used to be a man with a stick in his hand
(He used to have to mastrubate to get his thrills)
She used to be a woman with a hot dog stand
(She was a slut)
Now you've got soup in the laundry bag
(They are having safe sex-- using a condom)
Now you've got strings, you're gonna lose your rag
(She is still getting her period, but if they keep having sex she will get pregnant)
