I think John a has always been like that. I met him in 1979 I did as for an autograph, but those days are long gone and I wouldn't approach anyone now as that much of a fan. He was very polite signed what I gave him and added Queen Brighton 79 then said sorry is that ok?! He came across as being very unassuming and not a rock star.

I have met him completely by chance - twice!
On both occasions he was very relaxed and polite.
Here is a little story I posted in my album section at the Traders den a while back.
I bumped into John Deacon in 1976 in Hamleys Toy Shop in Regent St. London.
By a sheer coincidence I had purchased a Queen poster earlier in the day and asked him if he would sign it.
Poor chap must have wondered how I already had a Queen poster under my arm as I proceeded to unravel it, but he duly signed it.
Next thing he was inundated with autograph requests (sorry John!)
Years later I bumped in to him again outside the ''Break Free'' video shoot when he asked me if I had a cigarette.
I explained that my girlfriend (now my wife) and I had got there late for the filming and the doors were locked.
I also reminded him about that Hamleys incident ten years earlier and apologised, but he had no memory of it LOL!
Being the nice chap he is he escorted my girlfriend and I inside so we could watch the filming.
I even got to stand next to Freddie when he had a break, and got autographs from all of the band.

Wow! Kurgan you are so lucky!

Yeah, how lucky is it to turn up late, get locked out and then have that happen?
Hamley's is also bonkers the more I think about it, I'm wandering around and then he just appears in front of me!
I was 15 at the time, so not quite as reserved as I am now.
It's all fate man.

Great stories, Kurgan. Indeed, very lucky.

Wow.
Probably stopped at his door front. Sucks for him: BUT at the same time..... NOT BAD for 20 years of retirement! still getting the attention!
If I were to get his autograph I'd be sure it was personalized so there'd BE NO CHANCE OF SELLING it :)
He deserves better; But I guess it's making someone else happy[/QUOTE]
It appears your assumption that this happened outside JD's house is correct. I had a brief chat with someone yesterday who confirmed this.
It proves JD is approachable, as I've said in the past and not a reclusive nutter but I also think that doorstepping someone like this is very unfair and obtrusive.

It really is an asshole move, especially because they went on Ebay not long after.

Wasn't really an assumption. If I remember correctly he looked sun stricken (squinty), slightly bothered but accommodating, the angle also looked as if he'd been on his way to a ride but someone around was telescoping in. (it wasn't a friendly "guy on the street view")
add to that the dull brick wall, it seemed like a residence. All INFERRED, not assumed ;-)
very douchey of them.

This thread makes me all kinds of sad.
Clearly these vultures waiting outside his doorstep were just off to make a quick buck, and aren't actually fans of his work.
But in the event that they are - if this man is so rarely seen in public and you get 30 seconds with him, and you'd rather have him sign goods instead of actually engaging in some kind of meaningful conversation ... what a fool you are.

Hi Kurgan,
Those are awesome and thanks so much for sharing them! :)

I'm glad you liked the stories.
Although my conversations were a little brief and I asked no meaningful questions, I'm happy with the way they went
I got to shake his hand too of course, which was more important to me :-)

Don`t worry. I don`t think that the most of us would have react much different in those situations.

I saw John Deacon at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn't want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, "Oh, like you're doing now?"
I was taken aback, and all I could say was "Huh?" but he kept cutting me off and going "huh? huh? huh?" and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw John trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like "Sir, you need to pay for those first." At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually "to prevent any electrical infetterence," and then turned around and winked at me. I don't even think that's a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
