What would Queen have been like in the 90s ?

Assuming freddie never had AIDS and lived what would Queen have been like in the 1990s ?

Would they have become the worlds biggest band ? or atleast the biggest live band of the 90s.

How would they have competed with the likes of U2 both as a live band and selling records.

How would Queen have fit in (or not fit in) to the Brit pop scene ?

Its a pity we never got a another decade of Queen they only really existed in the 70s and 80s.

My best guess is that they would have essentially spilt up, only to, regroup occasionally - The Who, Stones etc

Maybe there's only so much that F could have taken BM-wise...

Queen would be Queen, what else could they have been?

Queen may have survived the punk movement in the mid-70s, but would they have been able to survive the Nirvana Alternative fad?

Watching the commentary to GHII, Brian was saying that during the video to I want it all... He mentioned along the lines of, how exciting it was making that video and how it was a exciting refreshing feeling to be doing basically a simple live video to a song and how it could have been something different they were looking towards for the 90s....
Could have Queen entered the 90s with a alt grunge rock sound and do what they did during the punk and pop era and do a tounge in cheek take on it???

Could we have seen a "I want it all" style, very simple, stripped down, raw and powerful version of queen during the 90s??? Queen doing what they did best and reinvent themselves?? Albeit in a much reduced capacity than what we saw in the 80s.. especially live performance and album produced wise....

Would have loved for them to have done an MTV Unplugged show

I personally think that Roger and Brian's solo projects, No-one but you, and Made In Heaven give us insights into what Queen would have done had they been a working unit 20 years ago. Of course, it's difficult to know if Innuendo or The Miracle would have happened had Freddie not been ill, but let's assume that they would have, and work from that place, since we definitely have these albums.

Blue Rock, Happiness, and Back To The Light give us insight into the songwriting of Brian May and Roger Taylor at that time. Since Roger's previous solo albums include some songs rejected by Queen - as did Mr Bad Guy - and I can only presume that Back To The Light includes some Queen-rejects too (although Brian was probably more able to get his songs on to the albums than others....), we can presume that the first post-Innuendo Queen album would have included some tracks like Foreign Sand, Just One Life, Back To the Light, Happiness, (I don't know the exact thought processes behind each song, there's a lot of speculation on my part here).

I know that in 1991, before it was officially known that Freddie was ill (which only happened the day before he died, even though it was widely speculated), the fan club letters from the band stated that the new Queen album would be released in 1992. After Freddie's death I remember that the tracks were spoken about in many publications and letters in the fan club magazines, for the full 3 years between 1992 and 1995, but they were focused only on the tracks Freddie was able to sing on. I suspect that some of the tracks earmarked for that project would have included songs that ended up on Happiness and Back To The Light. Sorry I'm repeating myself.

Anyway, I don't think Queen would have bothered to sound like BritPop, but they'd have remained fairly distinct within their own sound world. Freddie I'm sure would have revelled in the 1990s Dance revolution and he, with John, would have likely brought that to Queen to the chagrin of Brian. Roger would go along with it although he'd probably feel that it was out of his comfort zone - but he'd have enjoyed building up the complex rhythm parts that became a feature of the Happiness LP.

I think there'd have probably been two or three 1990s albums after Innuendo, the record company would have demanded it - they signed a big deal with Hollywood - and there would likely have been at least one more soundtrack for a Disney film or something. I'm taking that Disney speculation from the Delilah clip that Freddie was nearly involved in, and the animated Days of Our Lives video.

I'm certain there would have been a big tour, and something for the millennium as well, but it's really hard to know. It would have most likely been the trappings of fame and contracts that kept them together during this period. As Freddie turned 60 in 2006, he'd have probably focused more on his classical career, as a composer more than as a performer, although I'm quite sure there'd have been some recordings from him (age hasn't stopped Mick Jagger or Elton John).

Since the X-Factor and American Idol gave Brian and Roger a new platform, I think that Freddie would have been very much involved in it as well, and may even have ended up as a judge on the voice or something. Who knows?

How would one imagine Freddie on X factor or Britain's got talent!!! He had the potential to be hilarious!!! Far better than David Williams!! How would Freddie have been in the 21st century, this digital age, tv of this decade and just in general this acceptance of the LGBT community?? Surely he would be in his element!!!

Basically the same as what they were doing in the 80s. Assuming that they toured for whatever is The Miracle and Innuendo in this timeline, they would still have that legendary status they had at the Magic Tour. Heck, I could see the Magic Tour extending to Japan and South America if Freddie never had AIDS. Brian mentioned in an interview soon after Wembley 86 that he felt as if the band should either get right back on the road or go into the recording studio after they wrapped up their European tour.

Maybe Wayne's World would still revive Queen's popularity in America, and they could take their stadium shows here. We have plenty of huge stadiums, after all. :)
