Why would anyone would even speak of this song? One of the worst. When Freddie stopped singing and started screeching. [/QUOTE]
Agreed ... and he yells too much on Gimme the Prize as well.

It's an album that's short of inspiration. A few repeated formulas and one or two standout songs.
I think when Queen began recording songs outside the Queen style the cracks were obvious. Joan Amatrading's sax solo is this songs saving grace.

It's Steve Gregory. Joan is on 'Don't Lose Your Head' doing incidental vocals, not sax.

Maybe he's saying that only a Joan Amatrading's sax solo could save the song? :D

VH : Queen were tired of playing safe with the same formula year in and year out so i applaud Freddie and John for taking that different direction with Hot Space.
It is a great album and certainly in my top 5 Queen albums.
Hot Space has a wide span of musical tastes on it and there is something to please everyone.
Made in heaven is in my opinion the worst Queen album ever! It sounds rushed and overblown and that last track on the album was a sheer waste of valuable space, what crap.

I love Freddie's vocals on One Year Of Love...once again, Queen never repeat themsevles and there are vocal inflections from him that are not apparent on any other recordings. One of the lines,'I'm a prisoner of love inside yo--oouuuu' at around the 3:25 point is unlike any other Freddie vocal inflection...reminds me a bit of Simply Red at that bit. Love the sax.

I always got excited when Queen tried something completely new and "One year of love" was something the band had never ever done before and that sax made the track extra cool,
i bet the Americans loved it!

I found the link with the solo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itlzDoLB6JE
Sax solo is better

I hate the vocals on this track. Way too dramatic. I suspect Fred was trying to make up for the song's utter mediocrity.

Nah, It's a nice song. Again doing something a bit different than before. Would of been nice if Queen did a full album with ballads like that. More songs with The Sax. Then rocked out on the next album showcasing their ability to play different styles.

Mike, i do not think all the band would have agreed to one particular style of music for one album, and that is why they liked a wider span of music on the albums.
Even on Hot Space the tracks were injected with some guitar licks from Brian even though they were some disco type songs on there, along with the rocky "Put out the fire" which was Brians fav track on the Hot Space album

The song certainly fits the scenes it was used for in Highlander.

I can't see them ever wanting to do that. They've always covered a broad scope of styles on each album. Also using a sax as a feature instrument would reduce Brian's validity certainly as a lead instrumentalist.

I agree they would never do it, but I like that style of music. I think Brian could play a different style if they did a ballads album. Maybe more acoustic playing and the Sax mixed in. They never played only one on every album, so I agree never would have happened. Another interesting direction they could have taken if Freddie lived longer is have Cabelle sing on a few songs, a true rock opera.
