'Queen couldn't touch Slade in the 70's' - While i loved Slade, (they were my faves right up until Queen hit the scene) you cant seriously compare them to Queen.
Yes they were a fantastic singles band , 3 songs going straight to number one, but...name an album. I could , but not many of the general public could. They, like Sweet were of their time and couldn't progress at the same level of their glam rock heyday despite being a brilliant live act ( see Reading festival 1980). Sweet couldn't progress past the drink and drugs ! - totally burnt themselves out.
Seen Slade at Sunderland empire in '77 with Brian Johnson and 'Geordie' in support, as Noddy stated in the article. They had a concerted effort to crack the states in '75 with little success.
Well arguably they invented 80s soft euro metal in about '75 but yeah just weren't that sophisticated.
Mooghead, I love Slade. One of my favorite bands of the 70's and 80's. They were known before Queen were famous and Brian has mentioned Slade's significance to Freddie and Queen.

Geordie were great too!
One point with Sweet was the Brian Connolly had his throat very badly damaged at the peak of their fame and his voice never really recovered. It was around this time booze started to take hold. A sad series of events that prevented much development beyond what they eventually did. He had the look, and they certainly had the musicianship and voices to do so much more than they did. Sadly, his days in the group were numbered when he'd be pissed every gig. Sad.

Yep, and by the time they arrived back in the UK their fanbase had all but moved on.
The bugglegum hits didn't really do justice to the fantastic hard rock band the Sweet actually were. Brian Connolly, along with Brian May, was one of the nicest guys in rock. what happened to him was tragic.
