I just watched an interview with actor Joe Mazzello, who plays John at the movie, on an American TV show (link below) and he says John wrote them an email at the beginning of production for the movie, wishing good luck, etc. granted anyone could have written an email with his account to them, but who knows? I thought it was interesting:
