However the film "needed" to subtly pander to homophobia and make Freddie's sexual life style "not his fault" to make Freddie a more sympathetic character to the mainstream (who bought lots of movie tickets).
and lots of fanboy idiots said the movie made Freddie look as a bad person,
which is it ?

Many people close to the band have said negative things about Prenter, so I think it's safe to say that he was bit of cunt and in the end, not the best person to have around. I wouldn't go as far as call him or anyone else 'a bad guy' though, since in real life all stories have many sides and truths.
However, Hollywood films need generic bad guys and equally generic rise-and-fall story lines. Prenter and whoever else inspired that movie-Prenter-character got to be shown as one dimensional as all the other characters, with the exception of Freddie, in the film.
Some things Prenter gets blamed for might be true, some exacerbated but no one made Freddie gay, you can't really blame anyone for him getting AIDS and he went to the clubs and did drugs of his own free will. People on YouTube comment section might blame Prenter on those things, but it has never been the greatest example of intelligent life anyway.

Disagree with part of your comments, vulnerable kids get sucked into the drugs and booze cos there friends do it so they have a go, and the same for Freddie he was a vulnerable shy guy
and Paul Prenter was very devious and evil, he was probably very jealous of Freddie and thought if he got him hooked on drugs .............and introduce him to dodgy characters that may destroy him

Freddie wasn't hooked on drugs, lmao, and neither was he forced to clubs by Paul.

I was on Youtube and came across a video montage of photos of Freddie and Paul. Some weren't even Paul, but his other mustached friends. I believe Lee was one of them!
Anyway, most of the comments were things like "If it wasn't for Paul, Freddie would be alive!" and "Paul turned Freddie gay and corrupted him!"
I'm pretty disgusted that people are taking the movie as fact and not bothering to do any actual research, which in this day and age isn't hard.

Hopefully there are only a few idiots believe that "Paul turned Freddie gay". However the film "needed" to subtly pander to homophobia and make Freddie's sexual life style "not his fault" to make Freddie a more sympathetic character to the mainstream (who bought lots of movie tickets).
Bang on. It was pretty low risk, high reward.
But of course, by "mainstream" you mean "middle America".
The rest of the world has pretty well caught up by now.

You are definitely welcome to believe that fairy tale.
Hate to break it to you, but excess completely took over the band by 82. It got to a point where the show wouldn't start unless the coke showed up.

The Real Wizard That's an interesting contribution. While entirely believable, it would be great if you could elaborate a bit more on how you know it, if it was actually only on Freddie's request, etc.
With regards to Paul... Well, it is an awful and probably an inexcusable thing to do in terms of what he did selling the stories etc. But on the whole, I don't think he was as bad as some seem to think. I really doubt I would have spoken to such a guy again either after what he had done, but unfortunately, Freddie was also a tragic character in many ways and lived in the slightly wrong time in terms of HIV spreading on such a scale (mainly). It appears, not from the movie, but from all I learned about Queen so far, that he was vulnerable indeed, but also pursued certain things quite actively. And I wouldn't blame or judge him in any way for doing so. I suspect I would have been even worse under the circumstances ;-) But to sum up this thought, I think if Paul wasn't there, Freddie would eventually find someone else in this vein, because that's what he was simply attracted to at a certain time and what his various past experiences led him to. I will still think of him as the generous, loving person he seemed to be, regardless of whatever mess he sadly got into.
And finally, with regards to moviegoers and what they are going to make of it. Well, I think we already know the answer with albums selling like hotcakes and an increased interest in the band overall. Don't underestimate the public, especially in this day and age ;-) They just love Queen, end of.
Queen90 fan, if I remember your nick correctly, thanks for sharing this interview, very interesting indeed.

I think all characters from the movie are based more on fiction than on real people. His role in the movie also.

I kind of agree, but at the same time it can't be denied that Prenter led Freddie in certain directions at certain times. And it's well known that Prenter drove a wedge between the band and media, as he made himself a major point of contact, and also between Freddie and the band.

Even earlier than that, to some degree. Listen to the pacing of some of the songs in live shows in 79. It's clear that a member of the rhythm section was fuelled on Bolivia's finest.
