The family of Paul Prenter are probably as devious as he was.
He stabbed Freddie in the back by going to the press with his lies and trying to derail Freddie's career.
I have no sympathy for anyone like Paul who treated Freddie in such a disgusting way after Freddie was more than generous with Paul in the time he worked for Queen.

Great pictures! Love the Leiden 1982 one.

Paul was an asshole for selling Freddie's story to the press. The family acknowledged this.
Of course they defend him. It's family.

I'm not clicking a link to the daily mail. Any chance of a summary?

'Freddie was gay, simple. My brother did not make Freddie gay and Freddie was taking drugs long before he met my brother,' he says.

'So the idea Paul corrupted Freddie is nonsense, Freddie was not a man to be led.'

It's all hearsay

I'm trying to figure out exactly what it means when they say 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is an anti-gay movie!?! Half the movie is about Freddie's homosexuality either clearly or indirectly. It's kinda hard to make an anti-gay film about a gay lead character.

And of course the bits about Brian taking so long to make the film so he could trash Prenter's name! These stories are all 40 years old... no one was ever shy talking about what Prenter's role was.

Anyway... who cares?!

Did you even read the article?

It used Prenter as a stereotypical trope evil gay villain.

It depicted the gay lifestyle as lonely and empty and did not mention or show Freddie's inner circle of gay friends, while also depicting the other band member's upstanding family lifestyle.

It implies that Freddie would have been happier with Mary if only Prenter did not lead Freddie into the dark world of drugs and gay sex.

I understand where they’re coming from. First let me say that of course Paul shouldn’t have sold his story. No one should be outed. Ever.

Paul also shouldn’t have blown all his money on coke. However, the movie paints him as a villain and he isn’t here to defend himself. I can’t help but feel empathy for him as a human being that died a painful death.

The movie is homophobic because it paints Freddie as in love with this saintly woman (the talentless actress who played said they had to create Mary) who is pulled to the dark side by an evil gay man, which leads to his death. None of that is true. Freddie was born gay and was having affairs with men long before he met Paul.

Like the actor who played Paul Prenter in the movie said, real people are rarely completely evil or completely good. So I can understand the pain of Prenter's family at seeing someone they loved portrayed as a villain. There are two things I agree with in this Prenter article:
1) we don't know the full story because Prenter isn't here to tell his side of the story nor is he able to defend himself
2) if it is true that Prenter's parents were supportive if him being gay then it is wrong if the movie to have depicted them as being homophobic, one has to respect that family support

This is not to say that Prenter was not a negative influence in many ways, but just for us fans of Queen to not blindly accept a certain powerfully voiced narrative that this film presents.

I hate Paul Prenter because he infected Freddie with aids

That's one view and if written about will be believed. However the other side is that ithe film depicted Freddie as insecure and somewhat lonely (gay or not). He often alluded to the fact that most people didn't know the real Freddie and he was untrusting of people he didn't know.

It is possible that the film was trying to portray an honest depiction of how Freddie felt, that Mary was one of the very few he did trust, that despite what they offered each other he was gay and the relationship couldn't be what they probably both wanted it to be. Prenters involvement was somewhat predatory and he was not the best person to be around Freddie. Like any film there is a limited amount of time to establish character traits.

If anyone sees it as anti gay then they're not seeing or understanding the full picture

The film did make a number of cock ups like Queen performing "Fat Bottomed Girls" but with long hair and wearing the costumes of the Queen2 era.
Queen had short hair by the time "Fat bottomed Girls" arrived in 1978 and Freddie was into leather around that era.
Also Freddie met Jim Hutton in a gay bar but in the film it showed that he met him while at the piano somewhere?
Also at The Hot Space conference the press asking all those rude question and Freddie shouting just did not happen at all, i honestly thought the film was too far fetched
and treating the band like a Spinal Tap movie. Rami and the costumes were very good though but the script was bad and made Freddie look like a cartoon character.

Those cock ups are nothing compared to ...

Freddie breaking up the band for several years to go solo when Roger had already done a solo album.

Freddie begging to get back in the band.
