Rainbow, thanks for the link to The Royal Mint Web site. I'm not a coin collector nor do I plan to buy any of the Queen coins, but what an honor for the band! I can't speak for Freddie, but I have the feeling he would be so proud. Wasn't he a keen Royalist, a Brit @ heart? Till JB pointed it out, I wasn't aware the design of the piano keys on the coin "pressed down" for the 1st note of "Bo Rhap." I even tested the chord myself on a keyboard, the D, F and G notes! Yes, it's indeed the 1st syllable of the lyrics "Open your eyes, look up to the skies . . . "
BTW, today is exactly the 1-year anniversary of me joining QZ and Lee and Thor's thread. The past year has been an awesome ride in so many aspects, to say the least, and "I thank you all!"
Jo T, It has been a ride when I first started I didnt want to post I was a bit shy.I bet now people wish I would shut up.I always have something to say.Freddie was a coin collector wasnt he does anyone know? I think it's great their including John boy.If any band deserves it Queen does those guys have given so much to the music world. Those boys are in their70s and still going strong how blessed they are I think one of their founding members who created the logo and give the band their awesome name is smiling down today.
Amidds....I guess if you are thinking about adding to your coin collection, a Queen coin is the way to go! Is there a particular one that caught your eye? My favorite coin is the gold and silver 1-ounce proof, which has sold out. Gorgeous! Initially, I thought the coins were all different sizes, but the lesser expensive coins are the same diameter as the gold and silver coin, which appeared much larger.
JB050...Wow....I completely missed that info about the Bohemian Rhapsody piano notes on the coin when I skimmed through the description on the Royal Mint page. Thanks for pointing that out. That makes the coin ever better! I agree...such a clever idea.
Jo T. I bet Freddie would be quite proud of the commemorative coin as well. By the way, a big "Happy One Year Anniversary!" to you! Yes, it has been quite a ride. I joined this thread sometime in the summer of 2017 and could never have imagined how much fun and informative it would turn out to be. While I occasionally look at other threads and sites, this thread is definitely my home base. Even when things are quiet, I assume that many of the wonderful folks I have enjoyed conversing with will be back at some point. Thanks to Thor for shaping the tone of this thread early on.
.
Earlier I mentioned how I occasionally purchase Queen items that I don't need...well the last thing I bought (before the coin) was a wristwatch that I saw on eBay. It just struck me as something that would be kind of fun to wear. The watch face has a picture of Freddie from Live Aid. It's a man's watch, so it was way too big, but my husband removed some of the links and now it fits perfectly. I love it...and people have even complimented me on it. :)
Jo T, I'm glad you found this thread too! It's been three years for me now, and while I don't post as often I do check in.. Rainbow, you are right, Thor did set the tone for this thread. It's changed a great deal since the early days when he was always here, but I do still like to come by.
Chevy, I hadn't heard that Freddie collected coins. I do know he had a stamp collection when he was young.
Chevy...Freddie did collect stamps when he was a kid. His stamp album is now with the Postal Museum in London. In fact, the stamps were put on display in 2011 to celebrate what would have been Freddie's 65th birthday. I'm not sure if the stamps are on permanent display, or if it was just a one-time exhibition.
LOVE how the notes are the beginning of Bho Rhap!!! Now it's even more of a must have! Nice catch JB! Gold star!
Jo T, I agree on the coin, the gold and silver is my favorite. The contrast is very nice. Of course it's sold out but, that's ok, don't need to be spending that kind of money anyway!!! As far as Freddie being a keen royalist? Not sure, but I recently re-read the story in Phoebe's book about how they (Freddie, Phoebe and the NY daughters) watched Charles and Diana's wedding on TV in NY and had a blast! So I'm sure he was at least somewhat interested. I know it was well documented that he was very proud to consider himself British!!
Chevy, have to agree with the others. Don't remember ever reading about a coin collection, just a stamp collection. It seems as if the stamp collection was also more of a "thing the kids did" then a passion or genuine interest on his part, though, I remember a story about him buying stamp sheets for either Mack's or Mary's son to get them started - so maybe he had some fond memory of the tradition?
Amidds, thanks my grandmother was a coin collector and so was her father.I got some really old ones. Some are from like the early years I will have to look. She was born in 1936 so I'm sure they are older than that.
Thanks katydyd and Rainbow I figured you two may know .I think that's pretty awesome they are on display.
Re coins, I am the proud owner of a King George III half guinea, dating from 1791 It's is in good condition.
It was part of the collection from a grab bag of assorted foreign and old and antique coins I bought from an antique/junk shop back in the mid 1980's .I paid 50p for them! Lucky!
I don't care about the value, I just love to hold something so old and think about the pockets and purses it has passed through, and what things it purchased in it's life.
Flip.side.of the coin. (tails)
Susan (my vet) just phoned. She was pleased with how surgery went. Got mass out cleanly. Aspirate went well and she suspects it was probably only anaesthetic anyway.
She will be discharged with metacam and antibiotics (I requested liquid form)
Post up check.Wednesday 9:20. Stitches out Thursday Feb 6th at 9:10.
When she gets path results she will liaise with Willows Vet Referrals about any necessary chemotherapy.
Thank God that part is over!!
I can hopefully collect her between 6-6:30 p.m.
Will keep you updated. I'm so relieved the surgery is done.
