I call something officially released something which anybody could buy for a reasonable price.

Anyway, has anybody compared the two versions of Earth? Is it an improved version?

I don't think there's a major problem here, but let's get one thing straight: neither your opinion, nor mine, nor anybody else's, matters one tiny bit when it comes to defining what "officially released" means.

When a song has been released on a commercially available medium by the legal copyright holder at any time within the limits set by relevant copyright legislation, that song has been officially released. That is not a matter of opinion, but of law.

Is the "News of the World 40th Anniversary Box Set" officially released?

Of course. What made you doubt that one?

Definitely released yeah.

LOL.

I thought it might be "unofficial" based on the "21st Century Music Fan" definition because the NotW box set was so ungodly overpriced for just one CD (the "alternate" NotW).

... Plus it was an off-handed comment towards a particular poster who did not buy the box set when it was newly released (or ever?), but felt justified in downloading the "Alternate" NotW CD for free ...

I meant albums that are rare, you can buy the NOTW box set easily online and at HMV stores or any other specialist music shops. You're very unlikely going to find the Smile CD in a shop other than online.

Comments on here is really annoying me now: I uploaded a 23 minute audio clip as a gesture for people who may not be able to access the BBC Sounds App or those who want to keep the recording for longer than the thirty days it offers. I also happened to mention that it's got a high quality recording of Earth and it has turned into an argument over what "officially released" means.

But you do realize you yourself started that discussion by stating that according to you officially released is subjective.
Everything else is just evolution within a thread. This happens on forums.
Also, this last comment by you smells like you are just looking for praise. Thats not a healthy motivation for sharing something. Rather a needy and weak one.

I'm not sure whether or not this version of Earth is better than the Ghost CD. The bass is overpowering in this version, mixed way too prominently, distracts from the other instruments.

Thanks for the upload!

I'm not, I'm never that sort of person. I did it as a favour more than anything else.

I just didn't ask for trouble. I rather nobody praising than people having debate on what officially released means on the wrong section of the site.
