I don’t know where these interpretations are coming for as I thought it was common knowledge amongst Queen fans that it’s very much about one of the band members, presumably Brian. It’s off of Hot Space which was the album John’s influence touched the most and Brian and Roger were both reluctant about it and argued a lot. A level of tension grew, and it’s palpable in interviews, particularly between John and Brian. Reading their statements about the era and watching the interviews you can see that Brian was angry during the time, and John was incredibly smug, as one might be after one of your best friends demands to have a guitar solo on a track that you wrote to retaliate against him.
Additionally, John wrote AND PLAYED most of the guitar in the song, which isn’t true for pretty much any of the other songs they’ve done. Brian only played the solo.
One of the comments that i've found searching for the meaning of the song through web. Although the guy generally talks bollocks, this one makes perfect sense. Can anyone provide a possible alternative meaning of this song and explaing the evolution of the title? Afaik the song was initially called Wooly Hat.

Brian's Hair looks like a wooly hat.
You set that one up on purpose didn't you?

What? No. How could John write a song about an incident that was happening about a song that had been written already?
It’s well documented, by fans, that John Deacon disrupted the space-time continuum in 1982 and then again in 1928. But we won’t actually get to see it happen until 2021, the year Freddie Mercury proves he was Jesus Christ all along finally explaining why he wrote that track in 1973.
Some of you mofos need to get a good grip on your Queen history. That movie was totally inaccurate.

Brian was already having a dig at John while John was writing "Back Chat" and john did not really want any guitar licks on the song so Brian got lippy with John
and a row began....... the rest is history Hint the lyric towards Brian " You stand so tall you don't frighten me at all don't talk back don't talk back just leave me alone"
It's great when a real expert tells it like it is.
"Fat chance I have of making a romance,
If I'm ever gonna win have to get the last word in".
I guess neither of their wives were aware of his development in Munich.

"Fat chance I have of making a romance,
If I'm ever gonna win have to get the last word in".
If the song was about Brian May guess neither of their wives were aware of his development in Munich.
Makes sense to me and that is why John refused to stay in the band after Freddie died. Yes he hung around to finish of the Made In Heaven album before you all rant at me, but come on John & Brian had some tension going on between them.

I think Back Chat was inspired by John's frustration towards Brian at the time, which is well documented, but it doesn't mean necessarily that every line of the song is specifically about Brian, just that he was probably the starting point.

That gives the Song a whole new meaning. Always liked it though.
