I'd love to hear your solution. Ignoring him doesn't work - If anything it encourages him. At least by responding in kind, (somewhere) in the dark recesses of his mind he has to wonder deep down - "why are they doing this?"
And, but, also, (how about that for a Gerryism - three conjunctions to start a sentence), your preachy, sanctimonious response to those refusing to let his actions go unchecked, actually galvanises his stupidity and aggression.
There can only be one of two possible reasons for your intervention:
1. You're the one liking to feel truly superior, or
