It is my blind duty as a fan of Elton John to praise his singing abilities pre-1976. Thank you :-P

Chris Cornell.

I can't give you specific notes (I don't really pay attention), but that man's voice stretches from here to China and back. If Audioslave ever chooses to cover Queen, I think they'd do the band proud.

"Billy Joel (very powerful for a little guy!)"

Indeed. A lot of people don't realize it because his vocals aren't really flashy, and he often says he isn't really a singer, but did some amazing vocal work. Especially around the "An Innocent Man" album. His vocals were powerful and his effective range was large.

James Labrie is 'round 4 octaves too. And i'm with Mr Sad Guy, Ian Gillan at his best had an amazing vocal range...

LOL, I knew someone would have a fit at Phil Collins and it just had to be Flashman (by the way your not Joel Flashman from Northern Exposure are you?) anyway seriously, listen to some of the early Genesis stuff just after PG left, there's a fair range there, maybe not in Freds true league but anyway it was fun thinking about your reaction!

I've seen mostly solo singers who can sing close to Freddie's range, but if I had to pick a rock band singer I'd go with Jon Bon Jovi.

I saw them at Giants Stadiums in NY 3 years ago, and then Jon did this "dee dayy dooh" thing very similar to Freddie, and frankly I didn't believe that he could be able to hit notes that high.

There's actually an audio file that I downloaded once where Jon Bon Jovi did a very similar thing, and at the end he says... "I think Freddie Mercury would be proud of that one".

I'm sure that LaBrie, Gillan and Plant have/had if not bigger than at least similiar range... Well, LaBrie I'm almost certain has a bigger one...

James LaBrie is one of the best vocalists at the moment. He's technically brilliant and has a huge range as well. He performed the american national anthem last year at the NFL final. Listen to:

Some other great performers are Bruce Dickinson and Geoff Tate.

Maybe the dutch singer from the queen cover band, Miracle...Johnny Zwaan!
He's got a great range and at some moments you hear Freddie's voice in some songs he sung. I know, cause i've got a copy of Miracle - Live Covers cd.

<< Michael Matajevic from a little konwn band 1990-1993 or so, called Steelheart >> Once my ex-girlfriend made me listen a song by Steelheart called "She's Gone", and I was totally blown away by the the power on the voice of that dude. Amazing and a great song that is.
