Jasen, one thing you should remember is that not all Catholics think that exact way. Many are anti-abortion and anti-gay at all times, among other things their religion has told them to do; but many Catholics are not like this. Perhaps it would be safer to say that you dislike only those Catholics who think that way. From my experience, I have met very few Catholics who live exactly as the church wants them to. It's good to see that these people are still thinking for themselves, while looking up to the church just as a means of reference - not a crutch.
"If none of these stories were instilled into us as youngsters then the thought would never even cross our minds."
I'd have to agree there. If that were the case, then a lot more people would actually look within themselves for strength, and not somewhere else.
But we must keep in mind, religion is not just a faith thing. As I pointed out before, it can be a theological and historical thing too, and on that level, it can be highly educational. I will forever maintain that people who only search the bible for historical truth are completely limiting themselves.

I grew up Catholic and now I'm recovered. I am a pagan now and have be for a long time. Even though I don't believe in Jesus as the son of God and I don't believe the bible I still believe in everyone's right to choose what makes them happy. I also believe that people will have more impact by example than shoving religion down people's throats. I live in the bible belt and we have street preachers at red lights and standing outside of bars quite often. Freedom of speech is one thing but being annoying or offensive is another.

I also can't stand being pestered about religion. At my university there are these Asians (invariably) who go around and talk to you when you're sitting alone trying to eat your lunch/study/sleep. You try to be polite to them, but honestly, if I wanted to find God I'd go looking for him and I don't need people trying to show me the way.

Ok, I just started to read this topic and really don't have enough time to read it completely, so I'm just gonna say a few things.
Guitar hero, that really was a stupid thing to do, to get an attention in that way. Couldn't you just ask: "Do you guys know when Brian is playing...etc." You said noone who really believes in God and Jesus shouldn't be offended by your stupid sentence. I mean think about it. If someone told you (for example) your mother is a bitch, it would probably hurt and offend your feelings, although in your heart you could know your mum is the best woman on this planet. People have FEELINGS, and word can sometimes hurt more than anything else.
I personally do believe in God and Jesus, I can't prove Jesus existed, but I simply BELIEVE it. Although I'm not the biggest fan of Church, as an institution, because we all know they made many, many, many wrong things through history, not to mention killing people who had guts to loudly dissagree with Bible or anything that had to do sth with Church. Church is made of humans, and we all make mistakes. Also, there is a big amount of hypocrisy in Church. I also have my own brain, and don't blindly believe every single word that's written in the Bible. It has many "figures of speech" and can easily be missinterpreted. Church learns us it is "God's Word", but word written by the hands of humans. There's really no point in these argues because question of religion is far too complicated to be discussed on some notice board...
We should respect everyones right of choice, to believe in whatever they want. And I think it is the most important to be a good person, and not to judge, or harm anyone, no matter are you religious or not. If there is a God, (and I believe there is) I'm sure he would appreciate it.
So once again, guitar hero, next time use your brain before you write something that might hurt someone's feelings.

I totally agree with Little_Queenie.
"Respect" is a word that for many people has a "personal" meaning.

The difference is, one has the right to be offended about the "mother" insult because they've actually met their mother. I don't usually criticize people for thinking differently than I, but I worry very much about people who base their lives and their faith on something that may not even exist, and therefore are insulted by that one comment of mine.
"There's really no point in these argues because question of religion is far too complicated to be discussed on some notice board..."
Wrong again. People can have intelligent discussions about religion at any time. What slows these conversations down or even stops them is when someone answers a question with "because I believe, period". Some of the greatest discussions I've ever had in my life have been on the subject of theology.
And I do respect other people's feelings. But come on, this is a noticeboard. If this place is anyone's closest means to social interaction, then there's definitely a problem there. Do you actually think I'd go running in the streets proclaiming that Jesus was gay?
Maybe if you actually read the rest of page 1, you'd see why I started with that. And if you read pages 2 and 3, maybe you'd learn something about the theology of someone else, and open up that mind of yours a little on the subject.
>"Respect" is a word that for many people has a "personal" meaning.
Of course it does! But if everyone smiled and nodded and never commented on other people's beliefs, think of how dishonest our world would be (moreso than it already is now). It's people like you who are making this world such a dishonest place, Little_Queenie. If more people could be open to talk intelligently about their beliefs, just think of how much more understanding there would be in the world.
And thanks for the subtle pot-shot, Hitman. It's nice that people can judge my sense of respect by a single post on QZ. The least you could do was read more of my posts, especially on this subject, and maybe you'd learn something too.

My mind is very much opened to other's oppinions, thank you very much. And I've read many theological books, thanks for the advice, again. The point is you offended some people here with one stupid sentence (and btw, I'm not one of them, but can understand if someone is offended). And you just babble on and on about religion instead of simply appologise to those people who you offended.

"And you just babble on and on about religion instead of simply appologise to those people who you offended."
You call that babbling? You obviously haven't read too deeply into those theology books if you call my comments "babbling".
And I didn't need to apologize. Again, if you read the rest of page 1, you'd see what my motive was. Just because a few people disagreed with me doesn't mean I have to automatically apologize. Your mind is obviously "selectively" open other people's opinions, as you see the need for me to apologize for something that offended some other people.
People need to grow up and stop letting every little thing offend them. Again, this is a noticeboard. Do you think my true personality is what's on this board? Of course not. There's much more to everyone than what a bunch of text shows here. I said what I said, so MOVE ON. Don't judge my sense of respect for others just because of one comment. The least you could do is read more of this topic.
If I told you I went up to people randomly on streets and told them that believing in God was a waste of time, then you'd have the right to say I have no respect for others. Until then, stop complaining.

Well, I did comment your posts, I didn't just smile and nodd, and you still say people like me make this world a dishonest place?? A little contradiction in your post, don't you think? Wow, tnx, good to know. Even better when you hear something like this comming from a person who will say Jesus is gay only to get people's attention. Pathetic. And I'm really glad you got to know me so goooood by reading one my post, you're a great psychologist. You don't know a shit about me, but still run to conclusions... Fine, what else to say...

I totally agree. So how come you concluded that people like me make the world such a dishonest place and you don't even know me? lol

Truth, but some people could offend if you say Jesus is gay, so why saying it? People are different, we don't all get hurt by the same things.
