I feel depressed again. I just got over it, and its back again. I dont even know what im depressed about. My life is great, and eveyone loves me, and i have great friends. I just feel sad. I talked to my mom the last time i was depressed, and we are gonna go see some one about it (my choice). I hate feeling this way. No one should ever have to walk around feeling less than.

As many of you know, I'm bipolar. That means I get to experience not only the lowest lows but the extreme highs too. Circumstances and side effects have kept me unmedicated for quite awhile so I deal with it alone.

Pills can be very helpful when there are chemical imbalances which cause depression but it seems like lately there's a bit too much simple drug therapy for anyone who simply might be having a temporary problem. To be properly treated some talk therapy is necessary to determine if there are contributing factors.

And for men especially, there can be some rather unpleasant sexual side effects to any of the modern drugs being prescribed.

Whatever the cause, the worst posible thing you can do for someone who is depressed is telling them to 'snap out of it' or get angry with them. You wouldn't tell someone this who has just experienced a major loss... and yet the feelings the victim is having are caused by the exact same chemical reactions in the brain. That's how clinical depression works.. the normal chemicals that should be released only at certain times get released at the wrong times, or continuously and snapping out of it isn't going to change that.

Talking to a professional is the right thing to do.. and beware if they quickly resort to drug therapy without suggesting counseling. They aren't doing their jobs if they do that.

There is a difference between the occasional blues and depression. The blues is something we all experience and may last a day or a few days and then goes away. It doesn't interfere with your daily life. I don't know your age, but as you may know teenagers feel a lot of mood swings. I think that now we know so much about the world that people from the past didn't know, and that can make someone depressed, that may be one reason for the epidemic of depression. It's a good idea that you go see a professional.

I too am bipolar and luckily been successfully treated with medication for almost 15 years.

A book that was helpful for me is "Feeling Good The New Mood Therapy" by David D Burns. Basically, the book discusses 10 types of twisted thinking that your "inner voice" uses to cut yourself down. The book teaches you to challenge and refute the lies of your inner voice, thereby helping to relieve some of the sources of depression.
