Hi,
I am about to write an essay about Queen and I wanted to know what was the special thing about Queen? What made them so different from other bands and why did they have so much success?
I'm especially interested in the clothes, music style and the performance.
I would be really nice, if someone could help.

I think a lot of it was what each individual member brought to the band. Freddie with his musical brilliance and grand ideas, Brian with his amazing guitar sound, Roger brought the rock and roll element and John was the glue. All wrote great, but very different songs and the four of them made up that "Queen sound." There's more but I gotta get to work! lol!

I think you can also add to the mix the connection between them...a definite bond that was sometimes stretched but which never actually snapped. My favourite Queen moments, aside from the thrill of getting the new album or whatever, were those that demonstrated that they were enjoying themselves as much as we were. I don't think you get that sort of feeling in bands without that "deep" connection...you can see it sometimes on stage, in the studio, and in the latter years, in the way they protected Freddie.
Or maybe I am completely mad, and seeing things where things don't exist...

I think what made QUEEN special is what the band always said
4 individual people with individual ideas came together and they were better as four than on there own
All 4 wrote hits, and most importantly the band stayed together through everything
no one left no one joined same 4 guys from start to finish - well until Fred passed away - not this crap Brian and Roger are doing under the name QUEEN, well that's another topic

Queen was or is an very inventive band. They introduced a new kind of Rock In Roll. Queen was the first band who did Opera and Rock in one song (Bohemian Rhapsody). There music was very various and the way Freddie could entertain his public was great. I dare to say that Freddie is the best live performer in the world ever.
Queen was the band that introduced the video clip (Bohemian Rapshody). All the later video clips where very artistic. The concert after parties where also famous. Very extravagant.
I agree with everything that’s said above.

Almost correct, except that John wasnt the first queen bass player - there was 2 before him.
But the rest of what you said was spot on.

Everything, their live performances, their innovative ideas *like said above, range of music/video*, their musical connection, their personal connection, the understanding of what real pure music is, their understanding of entertainment, their understanding of their fans and how to play for them and enjoy themselves...the main thing i love about Queen is they encouraged their fans in everything, it makes you feel special and damn right happy

There was a real bond of love and trust within the band that never went away, like it does in other bands that break up, or lose the plot, or change lineup. I can't remember which one said it, but it was like a marriage with four people in it.
Together with that, each member was a gifted musician in their own right, which helped internal equality, even though most of the spotlight fell on Freddie.
and they had the chemistry.

I thought it was their ability to dress in drag at the drop of a hat?

Queen was a band rocking away like sponge.. they soaked up all the different musical vibes and brought it to the forefront of rock... covering very big musical genre... classical opera, funk disco, fantasy sweepin music, rock metal to a certain extent a little grunge of the seventies and early 90's, and also worldwide Fame as well as underated geniuses!
if you wanna compare Queen to anything... its like a candle.. a loong candle slowly burning with a very very hot flame... while the flame burns the wax starts to melt with out them knowing,.... inthe en its all over apart from the mark it left.
Queen is the candle in the musical night!

A huge thanks to everybody who's responded. Your posts helped me a lot and I am impressed what deep connection everyone who wrote something to Queen has. This is really amazing and so say thanks to all again.
