I hear you rhapsody. I would be joyous if the U.S. actually liked Queen still and looked past the fact that they were a, "gay band." I used to think VH1 was pretty good, but now all they've got is Stuff on Aaliyah, TLC, P.Diddy. Basically rich people that i'm jealous of. Anybody watch the FUSE channel? I have to say thats a great music channel, at least for my tastes.

Elvis is #1??
For God's sake. How long would it take for people to realize that Elvis was a fabricated act. He didn't have the best voice, he couldn't write his own songs, he could hardly play the guitar. So pretty much all the attention he received was based on his looks, and moves.
It's sad that for 50 years we've been calling 'The King Of Rock N' Roll' to a man who had just about as much talent as any member of a media puppet boy band.
And the worst part of all... NO BEATLES!! YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!!

So then you can truly say that The Beatles were the kings of rock since Elvis sure isn't! I never realized all those things until you just brought it up, Mr.Jingles!

Sounds like our Freddie ...
I heard Freddie's songs were ghost written by Mary Austin.

Ye, except that Freddie did have the best voice and he could write his own songs...

I love how people just don't realize what Elvis did for Music.
Look how many artists were influenced by him.
Just to name a few - The Beatles, Zeppelin, Hendrix and oh yeah QUEEN!!!
I'm sorry but based on that I would call him the King of Rock and Roll!!

Or you mean, what music did for Elvis?
Elvis was lucky enough to have great looks, and perhaps his only true talent was to be a good performer. But putting them on the same league as The Beatles, Queen, Led Zep, or Floyd is complete bollocks.
It's sad that most people think that Elvis invented rock n' roll when he couldn't write a freakin' tune. Meanwhile Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Billy Haley, and all the TRUE pioneers of rock n' roll are pretty much forgotten compared to Elvis.

hmm as john lennon said before elvis there was nothing.
ask yourself what is rock'n'roll? .... its a fusion of country, gospel & rhythm & blues or it stemmed from it, like it or not Elvis brought the black mans music to the white audience.
whilst i agree people like chuck berry, little richard, larry williams, carl perkins, buddy holly, ray charles etc... deserve more credit on song-writing terms... they couldnt sing like elvis.. it wasnt so much what elvis did.. its how he did it. any listen to arthur crudups "thats alright" "my baby left me" are examples.
plus he had great songwriters doing stuff for him "leiber-stoller" "pomus-schuman" "otis blackwell" to mention a few.
people are often too quick when they think of elvis as the overweight drug-ridden person he became in the latter years.
not the guy he was on the 68 comeback special or those early vegas concerts in 69-70... check out the "elvis the way it is" dvd for tracks like "patch it up" "just pretend" "cant stop loving you" "polk salad annie" "one night" youd be surprised

Ok. You guys are under the wrong impression. That was the top 10 only. I saw it from about number 13 down and i can't remember the lot. Abba was in it though (the top 13 I mean) can't remember where exactly. As were Oasis

Mr. Jingles -
What I mean about what Elvis did for music is by influencing many of our favorite artists to pick up an instrument, sing etc.
I highly doubt music would have shaped up the way it did without him.
I give all those Rock and Roll pioneers you mentioned their due, but compared to Elvis' body of work they couldn't even carry his jock strap!
Like Suckerpunch pointed out, John Lennon saying "Before Elvis, there was nothing!" When you buy a Beatles album or hear Lennon song on the radio you can thank Elvis Presley.
For that I call him The King of Rock and Roll!

Billy Haley's song 'Rock Around The Clock' came out in 1954, and was perhaps the first rock n' roll hit song ever.
Even John Lennon can be wrong sometimes.

Alan freed .. was the 1st to use the term rock & roll in 1951 .. to avoid the stigma attached to R&B and so called race music, he opened the door to white acceptance of black music, eschewing white cover versions in favor of the R&B originals.
well you could split hairs all night.... bill haley recorded "rock around the clock" april 1954, elvis recorded "thats alright" around july 1954..
haley didnt chart till till oct 55 with "rock around the clock", hed already charted with joe turners "shake rattle & roll" in dec 1954 (uk dates)
and thats my point presley was singing the black mans music .. Too often the study of rock begins with Bill Haley and His Comets with the blues and rhythm records that he, and others, used as a model. A musical genre does not simply appear, it gradually evolves to a point in time when some event-performance, publication, or recording allows listeners to perceive its unique qualities and apply a label. Wyonnie Harris' 1947 recording of "Good Rocking Tonight" was one of many "rhythm records" made during the late 1940s, however when it was recorded by Elvis Presley in 1954 it seemed like a new and different approach. What made it seem new and different was its context. Without exploring the history of black popular music, country and western music, race relations, technical developments, and the music business one can be led easily to the conclusion that rock and roll was some new and different music which appeared suddenly.
yes im a sad.... rock'n'roll anorak...but hey FRIED CHICKEN!!
