Why don't we compile our own top 22 voices? (21 that is, freddie obviously being number one) My top five would be something like this:

1. Freddie (duh!)
2. Mick Jagger
3. Steve Tyler
4. Robert Plant
5. Kurt Cobain

Any other suggestions?

Sadly, None of the ones you put (other than Freddie) would be on my list. But, Seal sure would!

Do you realize that "top 22 voices" means the best voices, not your favourite singers.

Did Kurt Cobain have a (singing) voice?

Of those that you mentioned, Freddie is the only one who has a "voice" in the classic meaning of the word. Other singers of the same category are f.e. Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley.
Not those are losers who fall, but those who don't stand up.

ok I get it- so you want voices with technical quality as opposed to flair? how about Billy Joel, Simon and Garfunkel (who supposedly had a pitch perfect voice)?

1. Freddie Mercury
2. Axl Rose
3. James Hetfield
4. Anastacia
5. Mariah Carey

Might look strange, but I simply like these voices....

Of course, one could argue that "voice" does not refer to singing at all, but rather as a voice of one's generation. In that case, Cobain would certainly apply.

Can someone please tell me what the big goddamn deal is with Kurt Cobain and Nirvana because I personally think his voice is nothing special at all and neither were Nirvana. Maybe I'm biased because that's not my type of music but what's so great about Nirvana?

These lists are for the best singing voices over the past decades, not the best "voice of a generation". Kurt Cobain did not speak for me, and I was a junior in high school when he died. Kurt Cobain's stature was elevated by his death. Had he lived he most likely would have faded into obscurity.

My top voices, the ones who I enjoy listening to no matter what the lyric, are:

Freddie Mercury
Lou Gramm
Rita Coolidge
Roy Orbison
Dusty Springfield
Brad Delp (Boston)
Karen Carpenter
Clay Aiken (yes, vocally speaking I stand by him)
Elvis Presley
Don Henley
Neil Diamond
Jimi Jamison (Survivor)
George Michael
Frank Sinatra
Lionel Richie

Perhaps, but it seems that everyone is quick to discount singers they don't like. Just trying to point out that there are different ways to approach the issue.

As someone who was in High School when Nirvana hit it big in 91, Cobain was certainly important to a generation of suburban wannabes trying to break out from the mold of conformity. If Cobain didn't kill himself in 94, I imagine his stature would be similar to Pearl Jam's and Eddie Vedder's right about now. Nirvana was headed anywhere but obscurity.

So you directly put Freddie's voice on the top of the list, huh?

Freddie wasn't that special, you can't compare nis voice to Britney's, or Geri's... for God's sake, Freddie's old-fashioned! We have to give some oportunities to the new high-quality singers. Everytime I turn on MTV I can listen to beautiful voices of singers that probably doesn't write their own songs, or maybe they are digitally touched. But who cares? They don't have the same opportunities as Freddie's voice had. Those new singers had to work hard to get some media attention.

Bah, Freddie's the one.
