I didn't like the mustache at first, but then when he shaved it off for the Barcelona look, I missed it. I missed his long hair more than I minded the mustache. But the leather and vinyl clothes were better than the leotards. All in all, I think he upgraded.
Lisa, I haven't seen the medical films of which you speak (and can't imagine he allowed himself to be filmed???) - weird. But I do remember seeing gossip column paparazzi photos of a very sick and wasted looking Freddie in probably 1991, which were published alongside the a report that Queen was denying rumors he had AIDS, as if to say, but draw your own conclusions, people. I remember how upset I was to see that indeed he was not long for this world and also how distressed he looked -- bundled up and obviously not wanting to be photographed, wanting to be left alone, just getting into or out of a car in a hospital parking lot. I can't be certain, but my memory is that it was in Rolling Stone; at least, I've mildly hated Rolling Stone ever since for the cruelty of publishing the damn photos, adding their little bit to the sum of human misery.
A friend of mine was diagnosed with AIDS around the same time that Freddie died. A year after my friend died, there was a big report about the wonderful new drugs that helped HIV+ people live better lives for much longer (e.g. Magic Johnson), and I threw something at the television in such a fury that my friend had not lived long enough to get the good drugs, which he might have done had he not decided to take himself off of the earlier, unpleasant, difficult drugs. I identify with the anger, not that one begrudges anyone, but at the whole situation regarding this disease.

I knew somebody that died of AIDS in 1993, He was too advanced to recieve the 'new' drugs. And I was surprised how well Holly Johnson looked on Bands Reunited. But getting back to the topic, I always likes Freddies look throughout 89/90/91 because of how ill he was and how well he conducted himself! Genius. I love the vid for Headlong, I just wish John would have done something with his hair!!

Ooh, John and the ever-changing hairstyles...then red/brown to grey and back to red/brown then finally grey...he really kept the fans guessing, didn't he? ;-))

Egret, I remember too well the tabloid pictures in NOTW and The Sun (damn those rags!). Strange but hardly any of that showed up in US tabloids like National Enquirer and The Star. I think the British ones are more brutal...look at pictures of poor Princess Di and see the deer-in-the-headlights look she had all the time. The absolute last picture of Freddie I saw was taken by telephoto lens from the ground near his home and showed Freddie standing at a window being supported by someone unseen. He looked ghastly. Thank God the picture was grainy, it would have been even more shocking in any clarity.
Rolling Stone published some pictures after his death but they were far better. I think they had more respect that the slags that camped outside Garden Lodge waiting for him to die so they could get "first scoop". Who could live with themselves doing THAT for a living???

Eyeliner. Lot's of eyeliner. I like when guys wear makeup (*cough* Dr. Frank N. Furter- although I wouldn't EXACTLY call him sexy.)

I would not have wanted to see the morbid photos of a decrepit Freddie. I understand his desire for privacy. Especially at the the time when AIDS was not even as well known as now and the disease was especially frowned upon.

I think Freddie always looked great. Especially cute with his hair like this: http://www.queenzone.com/multimedia/pictures/images/Freddie_Mercury/1592003370.jpg God,Superman is lucky;-) And I think he looked very handsome here: http://www.queenzone.com/multimedia/pictures/images/Freddie_Mercury/30420038737.jpg I love looking at all his pictures, but it also makes me sad that he's no longer here:( Missing him...

Same with me, Frejorobri. I love looking at the pictures, but it's so sad to realize that he's not here anymore...
Roger, though, looks insane in the second picture. Kind of like this one.
I must say i prefer his black nail polish, eyeliner look. But he wanted to make a change for himself and that's cool. (everyone succumbed to the 80's styles anyways)
