Good question. One that holds many different answers, from Freddie's early music beginnings in India, to John's when he picked up a guitar.
And of course, don't forget the producers that helped Queen to understand how to build up songs in different ways. I think their last, David Richards, played heavily in the last albums.
Can anyone throw more ideas on this one?
Peace,
Adam.

Practice!
Hmmmm..... How about practice, perseverance, pure raw talent, creativity, and perhaps a little bit of luck! Of course I am sure there are loads more that can be said on how Queen became the rock gods they are.
It's because they all have creative minds, none of them could have made it on their own... OK, Freddie would have come pretty far, but he would never have achieved the greatness Queen reached. It's just the talent of the four guys together, they can't do that alone...
Because they were brilliant.
"How did Queen get so good?"
Magic.
Magic.
2 main things for me :
- Because the four of them were so different
- Because all of them are clever people (and educated people, remember they are all post-graduate) and didn't see the interest of splitting or fall into drugs

They were just the perfect blend of talent, practice, perserverence, and will to succeed.
And don't forget a good early promotion
practice I suppose :)
It's their magnificent chemistry of course!
I mean, think about it:
What could the heat of reaction for the reaction of calcium hydroxide and carbon dioxide to form calcium carbonate and dihydrogen monoxide be?
Yes, you are right. It's -72.7 kJ! It's so obvious now why Queen are such a great band.

I`m a GnR fan, so I find all of their songs interesting (and most of their covers). This forum is almost entirely of Queen fans, who find all or most of Queen songs interesting. Same story. Or a Beatles forum or an Xtreme forum, etc
I think , personally, that all pro bands (from Kiss to Bangles) put their effort in building up each song to stand up in its own right.

Oh my god! A potentially honest, serious, and non-sarcastic post from Pim!
*applauds*
I think that Queen became so good because of a couple of things:
1) Freddie Mercury's talent
2) The wright musicians to play with him
3) capable of writing all good songs themselves and everyone has different characters
4) very clever/consistent marketing. I think we don't have to forget that.
Queen is not the best band in the world, but Freddie is the best singer. Queen would have been rubbish without Freddie (AS EVERYTHING AFTER MADE IN HEAVEN IS)
