Actually a lot of younger fans probably would have *wanted* the DVD version of STL with George Michael (it was a hit after all)...so I think Hollywood/Best Buy just screwed themselves by not properly printing that on the label :) They should have put in large type that the package contains BOTH versions of STL....
Anyway did anyone notice how clear the intro to Bohemian Rhapsody is now? I thought my truck's stereo was just having a good day, but then the booklet said there used to be a hum in the background that they removed.

Sorry, gang...it's the WORST Queen re-re-re-re-re-release to date. The sound on the DVD is bloody awful...and the CD itself is a huge joke. I tried it on digital and analog speakers and it sounds the same...muddy, heavy and too awful for words.
I'm really, really ashamed of Hollywood Records taking advantage of the US Queen fans this way ("never-before-seen", "rare", "bonus tracks" ---YAAAH! Elektra or Capitol could have done a more than decent job on it.)
It leaves one feeling like they opened a small package on Christmas morning hoping to find keys to a Jaguar...and ending up with a Yugo...

I just ripped the CD into mp3 format and there were clicks here and there. Is the CD copy protected? The disc was completely clean.

Will Best Buy accept returns of this CD? I thought about taking it in and showing them that there aren't any never-before-seen photos in it, etc.
I was seriously on the edge of deciding whether to buy it or not, since I have all the songs on vinyl, cassette, 8-track and CD already. But the stickers on the front convinced me, and then I felt like an idiot when I got to the parking lot and opened it.

Hehe, if you catch them on a good day, the best you can hope for is credit towards something else, but never a refund.
I disagree about the sound being bad on either disc.. I think you must need some adjustments in your system Lisa. This remaster (save for the bonus tracks) was done at the same time and by the same guy (Peter Mew) as the other 2001 remasters which you've raved about in the past.
I did say how I thought the live tracks sounded muddy and slightly distorted, but others raved about the quality even from very low quality samples which were posted the other day.
I'm In Love With My Car sounds the best it ever has in my opinion, it's clear but not harsh, nice and full and rumbly as a car song should be :-)
And the PCM sound on the DVD is flawless too. I actually thought it was slightly clearer than most video based audio.
Adam, I had no trouble making my copy.. not a single glitch. Even though Universal (one of the first copy control advocates) is distributing their stuff now, Hollywood seems to be against copy control and I'm thankful for that :)
Edit: It might have something to do with the CD-ROM track though. When I extracted the entire disc as one file in Sound Forge (with track markers), it gave an extra track at the end which was silent. But again, I had no problems. It might confuse some drives or software though.

Dan told me he was unable to rip the first and last tracks. It's either the cd-rom track messing up certain drives, or maybe random copy control.

I'm In Love With My Car is a good cut. I saw some chap on Ebay selling a Queen CD single of that in a red case. Not certain if it has the video as a bonus, but one copy went for a staggering $52 US dollars today. YIKE!

Well I'm not sure what the Japanese Greatest Hits II has to do with this, though one advantage Americans got by having our Platinum Collection delayed a year is that we got the 2001 Japanese remasters of hits I & II in ours and again, when I posted about the U.K. vs. U.S. versions to find out how they differed, you said you preferred the sound of the U.K. version.
I get the impression you just pick an argument about sound quality out of the blue without merit.

There is a recent promo single for the car song. I believe it's just the one track. That's the type of thing I wouldn't bother collecting.

Jeffrey, I'm not trying to start any arguments. I'm just ticked about sound quality in US Queen releases in general, and this new release is no exception. I was expecting something different for a change (I had spoken with two HW execs on a conference call in July and they *promised* this one would be "a lot better than recent Queen re-releases" -- HA! Fooled again!)...but oh well!!
I'm very picky on sound quality on anything. When Rush finally released Vapor Trails, no surprise that there was a lot of distortion and overemphasized heaviness in sound (the producer was Paul Northfield, same one who produced Hole, amongst other bands, so that was to be expected). And Beatles "1" a few years ago. A little overmixed, especially on the early 60s songs, but then again there's the issue of the age of the original master tapes. Since the technology was pretty basic then and certainly nothing close to what it is now, trying to make something older sound newer and better sometimes makes it sound even worse...as in the case of the new WWRY GH. You can improve too much, and in doing so loses something along the way.
So I will listen to the older, better versions and get off the soapbox for now.

I have to disagree with you this time. The 2001 remaster is the best GH available, as it was mastered using the highest quality transfers from the original 2-track tapes. Besides, the WWRU edition has 3 bonus tracks (and an extra DVD at BestBuy) while the japanese releases just one (TeTo single version).
HR have certainly improved their CD releases since the 2003 issue of Wembley. I admit that HR commited some mistakes in the past, but some of them were not their fault. Properly speaking, the only remasters they managed were the 1991 ones, and they didn't come out so bad considering the technology available at that time and the logistic difficulties regarding 'overseas remastering'.
If you experience sound problems on everything you hear, I guess you should check your equipment.

Yeah, and the two biggest flaws in the 1991 remasters were actually done by Kevin Metcalfe of the Queen camp, not Hollywood. Missing parts of It's Late & In The Lap.. which were replaced rather quickly when the problem became known.
He continued to work for Queen through 'Rocks' and can also be held responsible for the Fat Bottomed Girls error.
The 1991 remasters are actually pretty good and have the advantage of the tapes being 10 years younger too :)
