I thought Plant did a superb job on CLTCL, and as best a job as possible on Innuendo. Plant's range wasn't totally there, but he put as much emotion into the song as he possibly could have. This just goes to show how great our Freddie was.
CLTCL wasn't him. Innuendo was bit for him, like Kashmir.
Today, I listened to it for the first time (because, thank God, it was excluded from the official release), and I was wondering what the lyrics from the Plant version were.
Did he even sing the words from the song that Queen wrote, or was he just murmuring some unhearable words that he just made up?

Plant had to be there - he was one of Freddies idols and Fred adopted quite some of his stage mannerisms from Plant - of course he found his own style by adding some macho and campness (Plant was more of a dandy-storyteller) but Bob was a rolemodel.

That doesnt better his performance at the Tribute, though. It certainly wasn't a highlight in terms of quality, but Freddie would have been very proud to see his idol performing a Queen song - and of course he would've grinned like a Cheshire cat that his idol could not match his range !

Freddie macho and Robert a dandy? Now I've heard everything :) Robert might have styled himself on 60s icons, but my God the ladies liked him. "Cock-rock" they called it remember...
I have heard both Innuendo and CLTCL, and I must say that as a die hard long time Led Zep & Queen freak, this was the ONLY Zep/Queen related download that I havce ever deleted (although some of you have got me interested in hearing it again, just to be sure...)
I really thought it was appalling. Utterly tragic. Some things are better left alone once they are over, and Rock God careers are one of them.
That said, I saw Robert in 2002, and he was very good live. So maybe it was ajust a bad night huh... I never saw Zep - the biggest tragedy in my life. But I did see Queen 3 times, and that was a friggin' triumph if ever I had one.
Actually I did see The Song Remains The Same recently and my comment would be that Queen live were far better than them. (Subjectively, of course.)

I totally agree, CLTCL absolutely rocked. It was a superb performance by our boys and Bob Plant, and it felt rockier because Brian used the RS for the fill ins as opposed to the Telecaster that he would have normally used.
HeM, you dont know what you are on about. Robert Plant, in my opinion did a fine job. Not to everybody's taste, but he put his heart into it. Well done RP!
He sung it with his own unique style and that's great. And Liza did it in the same way. Or someone supposed that they could sing it with Freddie's voice?!
it doesn't have to sound like Freddie to be good. But it doesn't mean that everything different and unique is good.
As I was saying before, there were a lot of moments where I didn't even recognize the song, and was just asking myself what the **** Robert Plant was singing. I'm not certain whether this is called emotion or a failure (side note: I like Led Zeppelin).
