I don't think Scandal is about AIDS. And I think that both the song and the video are brilliant (though I take the point Freddie's make-up was too harsh).
When I think of inspirations for it I think of Cadbury's Flake as well as Brian & Angie, more than I think of Freddie.
But Freddie did put (to my ears) a lot of emotion into the "deeper and deeper and deeper inside" bit.
Having said all that I think it more likely songs coming from the other 3 have the occasional hint of Freddie's illness and death in them. I suspect Freddie himself distracted his attention AWAY from the subject. A good pair of examples: Delilah (a Freddie composition) and The Show Must Go On (widely believed to have lyrics from Brian).

Let me put it to you this way; Freddie himself once told me that "Scandal" was about a long night, a sheep, a Pakistani male prostitute, a toaster, and a cucumber.
