I like Jim Hutton and his book too.
Freddie Mercury. A wonderful human being and simply the greatest singer, performer and composer of our times.

Well, I do. I like him and I like the way he talks about Freddie, as the love of his life. At least, he says he loved Freddie and I wish it was true, cos Freddie really deserved somebody to love him and stay with him until the end. And you can't say Jim did otherwise, he was there right up until the night Freddie died.
And I do believe Jim loved Freddie. If he hadn't, then why wouldn't he have walked out on him when he learned his lover had AIDS?

How can you like or dislike Jim without knowing him personally? How many of you have met him more than once, twice at the Convention?

It's obvious he made some real major mistakes in the past (Freddie wouldn't have wanted the whole world reading details about his personal life or watching him in the bath) but he was Freddie's lover and Freddie loved him.

You can catch a glimpse of somebody's person reading what he wrote (I can tell you, I'm a writer too). But you're right, it's hard to say whether you like him or not, without knowing him personally. But I like him the way I get to know him by the book...

I don't know if Freddie cares anymore for that (in case there's an afterlife, if not, then it really doesn't matter). Anyway, it doesn't affect him anymore. At least, it's written with love and I like it better than the other Freddie books.
Don't come up please with smth like: how do you know he loves Freddie? His writings leave this feeling, after reading. As a writer, I know that, in order, to make someone feel that you were in love with somebody, by reading what you wrote, either you must be gifted and create beautifully an impression (as the great writers do), either you must deeply feel something. And if you feel it with all your heart, even if it's not well written, the reader may get to share your feelings. And Jim is definitely a bad writer... So I guess he did love Freddie.

I don't like or dislike him because I don't know him, but I don't think he should publish the private life of Freddie, especailly he knows how Freddie loathed that. Yeah, that shows how much he LOVES Freddie!!! Also, this is just one side of the story coz we don't know if all the details in this book are true. He might be Freddie's last love, but how do we know whether he twisted or distorted something or not. Freddie can't defend himself right now.

Sometimes, authors or story tellers tend to exaggerate some incidents to make the stories interesting. So there is no way we can decide if the book is 100% accurate. Don't get me wrong. It's an interesting read though. My point is don't believe 100% what you read or hear. Always use your judgement to analyze the information you receive. And that's my two cents.
"When I'm dead, who cares? I don't." "Anyway the wind blows..." --Freddie Mercury
Of course you can't say it's the 100% truth in the general point of view, but I do think it's the 100% truth to Jim. It's his point of view on how things went and how he felt about Freddie and their relationship. Anyone who was involved in any of those matters Jim writes about would tell some things differently. I can't say whether I like Jim or not based on reading his book a couple of times. I just don't think he should be criticized for telling HIS story of his life with Freddie.
Jim is the last lover. That is it.

I agree. It's not only Freddie's life, it's Jim's life too. It's his memories and he's got the right to do whatever he wants with them, as long as they don't harm Freddie in any way. And they stopped doing harm to Freddie 13 years ago.
Oh and if Jim doesn't find offensive to himself that other people should know his private life details, then he probably doesn't think he's doing smth wrong to Freddie, by writing about them. After all, these memories belong to him as well as they belonged to Freddie, so if he wanna talk about them, you know, it's his right to...

Good god....
I read the book and it seems to me true and reliable; the described picture of freddie is simple, sweet and generous, just like I think he was.
