I can't say that I like or dislike Jim Hutton either.
I didn't really like the book, although it does give insight in Freddie's private life but the way it's written is rather boring I think without too much emotion.
What I think is that Jim was a) lucky to have met Freddie or better to have been "found" by Freddie because I think his life in Garden Lodge was by far much better than the life he had before and a whole new world was open to him and he got to see places like Japan where he probably would never have gone to without Freddie
and b) on the other hand I think Jim must have been very very patient because I don't think it was easy to live with someone like Freddie who was used to fame and fortune and everybody doing what he wanted and/or ordered and he could get quite bitchy about things, especially when things didn't go the way he wanted them to.
and c) I think Jim is lucky that he's still alive and well thanks to progress in medicine.
This is what comes to my mind when I think of Jim Hutton.

I just don't think he should be criticized for telling HIS story of his life with Freddie.
I agree. It's not only Freddie's life, it's Jim's life too. It's his memories and he's got the right to do whatever he wants with them, as long as they don't harm Freddie in any way. And they stopped doing harm to Freddie 13 years ago.
Oh and if Jim doesn't find offensive to himself that other people should know his private life details, then he probably doesn't think he's doing smth wrong to Freddie, by writing about them. After all, these memories belong to him as well as they belonged to Freddie, so if he wanna talk about them, you know, it's his right to...
Fact is though that it's not only HIS life but also the life of a rock legend who hated it when his private life was discussed in public.
And come on, if it was about Jim's life, who would have cared if Freddie Mercury hadn't been in it? So it IS mainly about Freddie cos otherwise no one would ever have known Jim Hutton.
I just think that Jim's done something against Freddie's will. Freddie wouldn't have been happy to know that his lover made details of their love life public and what's even worse is that he gave away details about Freddie's illness.
And Freddie had his reasons why he never talked about his illness until 24 hours before he died.
And another thing that annoys me in the book is that Jim sort of puts Mary Austin down. She was Freddie's best friend and she was above all of his other friends and lovers.

Well, it's rather normal that he puts Mary down. After all, she kinda threw him out of Garden Lodge and obviously he didn't like it at all. Besides that, I also think it's a matter of jealousy, Jim was perhaps not very happy with Mary around to remind him of Freddie's past. I guess no one is very keen on his lover's ex-lovers... Then Mary suggested taking off the wedding ring he gave to Freddie. Maybe Mary didn't mean it or indeed just feared Freddie's finger would swell up, but Jim must have felt offensed by her words. I think he took it as a personal matter ("oooh jealousy"...). I can't blame him for not liking Mary and I kinda have the feeling Mary doesn't like him either...
Jim Hutton's book is basically full of lies. His book is filled with contradictions. I can point out a lot of them, I have done quite some research on Freddie's life and I find his book very insulting on every level.

^ With all due respect, I think it a tad odd that a "new" user has specifically dug THIS thread from almost a decade ago to add such a claim, without substantiating said claim.

I think Jim was a good man. Roger Taylor said it, Mack also...a lot of people, but he had the mistake to publish that book being angry.

I learnt from this book many important details about Freddie which I had no concept of. And it changed my view of him.
But IMHO in many moment Jim assigns himself a too big role. He thought that he was for Freddie much more important person than Mary. This was a mistake.
That`s why I prefer a Phoebe`s book because He (Phoebe) has much more respect for Freddie, than Jim.
