Queeniac, you are a true inspiration to the power of Queen's music!! It doesn't matter if you're 1 or 100, Queen appeals to all age groups and their music sounds as good today as when it first came out.
I've been a fan since 1973, Keep Yourself Alive was the song that hooked me. Thirty-one years later, I love them just as much as when I heard that first song.
Good luck in getting those CDs and DVDs and making up for lost time!

I live in the U.S. in Virginia. The best Queen album i found was News of the World because all of the other albums were digitally remastered or whatever that crap is called. It angers me that i can find an Black Sabbath tee shirt, and Led Zeppelin shirt, and a rolling stones shirt but i can't find a Queen shirt. That is screwed up. That is why when i am out of school and independent, i am moving to England where good music is appreciated. Not to get into politics or anything, and i also don't want to offend anyone, but i also dislike the U.S. because there are so many librals protesting that i just want to shoot them down. They just need to keep their mouths shut so they don't get arrested.
Oh please. If you think you're going to get rid of liberals by moving to England you are sadly mistaken.
I live in washington pennsylvania and I am almost pretty sure that I am the only queen fan around this god forsaken town...i too have noticed that queen does not get alot of recognition in that states...I think it is because none of the band members died of a drug overdose, or whatever may have you, and people just don't have any taste. Has anyone ever noticed that famous people that die of overdoses are so recognized and celebrated all the time? why is that i wonder...
Ooh, you should remember you live in the South where Queen is still thought of as a homosexual band because they never forgot the I Want To Break Free video! That was 20 years ago but the mentality of some people still continues to amaze me in the Bible Belt.
There are a lot of fans in the South -- I unfortunately live there as well but country music is popular in my town (ACK).
Don't feel bad Mourning. I am a Mass transplant living in SC and I despise it. I despise country music. I am heading to Florida for winter but am going back to Mass in May for spring and summers.
I'm from Troy Michigan and I'm a pretty big Queen fan. I don't think they're under appreciated, they're just too old. Queen doesn't sell records anymore and nothing Queen related has happened in the U2 since the early 1990's besides the release of We Will Rock You in Vegas, which is in a fact a huge hit!
Groups don't stay in the limelight more than a couple years in the states. At least anything new. And not much coverage is given to older groups like Queen that doesn't produce records anymore. U2 and Duran Duran are getting a lot of coverage just because they released new albums. And the only groups that are still around that aren't writing a ton of music are things like kiss, the stones, and zeppelin. And even then it's mainly just a cult fan following much like a Queen one
Whether they are huge or not I bet a good number of people can sing Bohemian Rapsody and I dont know a single person that hasn't heard WWRY or WATC. If you start to sing the opera part to bohemnian, everyone around you at least knows a line or two
Duran Duran's latest album stink bombed in the US and I lost interest in them when my sister brought me home a copy of Ozzy Osbourne's Bark at the Moon in December of 1983 and I turned my back on the Durannies once and for all although I tried to like Rio at age 27 but after I heard Roxy Music's albums like Siren and Avalon, Duran Duran just sounded like a poor Roxy Music facsimile in comparison. Queen were huge for about six years in the States. Pink Floyd on the other hand are still selling records even their last proper studio disc The Division Bell stormed to #1 and stayed for a month and the album was on the charts for a year. U2 have sold 900,000 copies of their new disc and will have first #1 album since 1997 this week.
I live in Northern KY. Here, the people who like Queen, REALLY like them. The people who hate them, REALLY hate them. Usually for stupid reasons.
In Minnesota USA with The Works album in hand, I went shopping for a square frame for it. I made a stop at a bakery to buy some freshly made cheddar/garlic bread ( yummy), and the young woman clerk noticed the album and said, "I love Queen!!!'' She said her parents were middle-aged now but old rock fans so she grew up listening to Queen, and still does. I told her about the Queen banner I had won off of eBay, and she thought that was really neat. I run into Queen fans all over the place. It's fun!
Well I live in the UK and although quite a few people appreciate Queen, I don't think it is near enough people. Especially teenagers like me. They really are missing out. Though atleast there isn't a wehatefreddiemercury club.
The critics may not be too kind to Queen, but they are pretty popular over here, or at least, in all non-Southern areas. (I hear they're practically non-existant in the South- though woul you want them to be popular in the anti-gay, anti-Black, anti-Women, anti-Choice, poor, low-intelligence (proven) pro-Bush hillbilly hick capital of the world? They are neanderthals whose idea of good music is Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney, and they honestly see Bush as a man of moral values and integrity, and a strong leader. They need to killed.)

I had a pic of Queen on my notebook with their names and whatnot. Some black girl(I am not racist, one of my best friends is African-American, but 50% of the black people around here deserve to be hated) passed me and started off "Who de hell is Freddie Mercury? Whas at, a woman?!!!!!" She almost went home in a body bag. Not to mention, a few girls were asking me if the picture was of the Beatles, and I told them no, it is Queen. Then this other black girl(hey, it's a trend) butted in "QUEEN? Whas a Queen?!?"-I swear, half of the world could hear the bitch carrying on- She walked off and apparently somoene clued her in- "They GAY?!" It was so annoying, some black people just laugh and carry on like they're the only people that exist. I'm only stating a fact. Then, again, white rednecks here are just as bad. If I ever get out of here.......... I was arguing about the Beatles with a friend of mine. Apparently he was having a hearing problem and didn't get my point, but he actually like sthe Beatles, but I swear, I think he's only heard A Hard Day's Night and She Loves You. I was trying to explain that that is utter junk compared to Revolver and everything post 1965, but he thought that I was insulting the Beatles altogether, which was not the case(I've loved the Beatles longer than Queen). So he says "Well, it's better than Queen." Urgh.
That was more than anyone needed to hear, I'm sure, but I needed to get it out!
Being from germany I can only give an impression from overseas, of what their reputation in the states is - from what I've read and heard over the last couple of years. I've always been interested in the reasons for their waning success in america, and thus it has always been one of my "favourite" topics to discuss. Without a doubt they were huge there from about '74-'82. Whenever I can, I try to research anything about Queen's standing there nowadays. There is still something special about making it in the US.
What comes to mind is the way Jay Leno introduced Bri in '92 ('93?) on his "Tonight Show" (with a very funny fake english accent), which can be heard on the "Resurrection"-CD:
"My next guest is a founding member of british SUPERGROUP Queen" - and the crowd goes berserk.
But american TV-show audiences are professional, so I wouldn't interprete too much into that ! ;-) But I like Lenos introduction.
Years ago, back in my schooldays (early '90s) I asked an american exchange student about Queen, and she had never heard of that group before. I numbered their greatest hits, but only Rock you and Champions "clicked".
Then again I remember those comments from Lars Ulrich, Axl Rose, we all knew Extreme, and the Foo Fighters seem to be huge Queen-Fans. Cobain mentioned Freddie in his farewell letter.
Tricky - but the quintessence of the posts here and what I mentioned above seems to be, that Queen are considered in the states as one of those legendary 70's- Rockbands and that most of their catalogue is well respected. At least in most areas. Would you americans agree ?

Including the shallowbrained "Schlager"-scene, which is responsible for kitsch-dumb sob-stuff, like the band "Pur" for example - germans know what I am talking about.
But it's a good mixture, because there are loads of true rockfans as well, who simply adore Queen. They're really, really big here.

I am in Houston, TX, USA and we have a pretty good Queen respect thing going here. Queen is played quite often on the radio here as well.
Good to hear that. I thought BLUE states were more into Queen music(or Rock music) than RED states. Music taste parallels with politics taste?
I'm north of Seattle, and our classic rock station here plays a lot of the royal lads. They even played Innuendo once.
