I wrote this article, and yes, I did mean it to be funny. And sad. When I began being a Queen fan in 1981 or so, and started buying new Queen albums with Hot Space, it *did* feel like I was the last Queen fan in America. At least in my 14-year-old mind. Of course I know it's not true, but you can't take away that feeling, what with Van Halen and AC/DC fans all around.
And I just wrote the John thing to be funny. I love a lot of John songs.

Well, now that I've read some of the more negative comments as opposed to the others who evidently know how to read a self-deprecating, tongue-in-cheek piece in a humor magazine, I have to say the most of you are complete idiots, or perhaps "playing dummy."
I became a Queen fan when in 1980-81, just before Hot Space came out. Except for phone calls and postal mail, there was no way for me to connect with other American Queen fans. At all. One person points out erroneously, talking about Live Journal, etc., but there was no World Wide Web back then. There wasn't even email, or even faxes, around this time.
So when I bought Hot Space, and proceeded to miss the tour and saw that album and all the succesive album flop on the US charts, it really did feel like I was the last fan in America. It would be years until the Wayne's World revival -- that didn't happen until I was finished college, and, especially after watching Freddie die for a couple years, it was too little, too late. Granted, I loved the movie, but it wasn't why I first got into Queen. I had been a diehard Queen fan for 11 years by then.
So for you all to say I'm "full of myself," I say: Grow the fuck up. I've got more Queen fan street credentials, more bootlegs and rare 45s, more time logged in loving this band and everything about it, than all you naysayers can ever wish to have. You all have years to put in, through thick and thing, before you can say I'm "full of myself" or I don't have a right to write about Queen.
I am a writer, and artist. And I can laugh at myself now, and see that, although Queen was and remain an essential part of my growing up, it wasn't the end of the world for me that Queen wasn't big anymore in America, and that they didn't tour here anymore, or they weren't as pervasive and all-encompassing as in Europe and the UK. But back then, when I was 13 years old, it did in fact feel horrible.
But if there's one thing Queen's sensibility that taught me, it's to laugh at yourself, to have tongue firmly in cheek. Any Queen fan that doesn't understand that is missing out on a big part of the genius of Freddie and the Boys.
The negative Queenzone people, by and large, are a bunch of grumpy-ass know-nothings who try to prove they are bigger fans than everyone else because they know the proper spelling of Farookh. And it's not only annoying, it's disgusting, it's anti-intellectual, it's against everything Queen holds dear, which is: Don't take yourself seriously, have a good time all the time, and leave them deafened blinded, and begging for more.
Ya know, after reading this, it still does feel like I'm the last Queen fan in America.

I couldn't agree with you more. What was it that Freddie had said? I think it was, "I like to ridicule myself, I don't take myself too seriously. I wouldn't wear these clothes if I was serious. The one thing that keeps me going is that I laugh at myself."

Hiya Krizzy. Sorry I sound scary, but someone has to stand up to all these Queenzoner bullies. And I get my gander up when it comes to my writing, because mine comes out of love, and their comments come out of grumpy hate.
I'm psyched about the tour. Seeing Roger and Brian play live, I mean, they're maestros, geniuses, and I think it's high time they got out and played live. It won't be as musically diverse without Freddie -- it never could be -- but for a rocking great time, this event will have no equal. I just hope they come to the States!

I don't wanna sound too scary, but if they tour the States, I plan on living out of my Honda like a Grateful Dead fan and catching all of the gigs. My wife is terrified, but what are ya gonna do? This is a once in lifetime opportunity to hear the Red Special live!

Sorry Daniel I cannot relate to being that obsessed with just one band when there are soooo many great bands who are of Queen's era that are still touring. But I loved Queen then and will try (ahem) to accept the new iteration of Queen + even if is hard for me to swallow in many respects. I would love to see the musical when it goes on the road here in the States but that remains to be seen (literally), still it is good to hear that the old chaps are back in action!

Yeah, I definitely have other music interests, but oddly they are not supergroup-oriented. I do love Van Halen. Queen's absence from touring here in the US, for me, makes the heart grow fonder.
