Hi. I was wondering about that song Hammer To Fall and this one line always stuck out in my mind.

"In the shadow of the mushroom cloud"

Does anyone know what that's supposed to mean?
That line of the song means that in the time when Brian was young the youth had to live in fear that a nuclear war might happen
"On the first day Pim & Niek created a heavenly occupation. Pim & Niek blessed it and named it 'Loosch'." (Genesis 1:1)
they still did in 1984 though...didnt they?
During the Cold War between America and Russia or whatever.

The Cold War was supposed to be over by then, but I think it didn't officially end until the late 80s or so... don't quote me on that, though, because I'm not 100% sure.
"What has it cost you? What have you won? The sins of the fathers are the sins of the sons; it was always within you, it will always continue, and it shouldn't surprise you at all." ~B. Joel
the cold war was far from being over in 1984.
only a few (2, i think) years before, nuclear weapons were stationed in both parts of germany.

Very funny, Alex. Really.

To be precise, it was the Cuba crisis that brought the world very near to a nuclear war, and made Brian think of such a horrible scenario... I don't like mushrooms... not even the ones that grow in forests.
Keep 'em mowing blades sharp!

how come anyone can not like mushrooms? heh... but well... anytime one sees somebody picking mushrooms in the forest, it's almost 100% certain that it's a guy from poland :D and the "other" mushrooms.... well... unless you live on 10th floor or so, it's quite safe hehe
the only thing to fear is running out of beer...

As a Russian I can confirm this. The cold war was finished at the begin of 90s.

And there's another one Queen's quote about the cold war - on 'The Miracle': "super-powers always fighting".

About HTF - listen to Brian's commentary about this one on GVHII he explains everything.
