Does it really matter? It wasn't going to change anything.
Someone seems to think that they can see Kaposi Sarcoma on Freddie during the '84 Montreaux festival. I watched it myself - there are markings, but god knows if they're that or not. And that his bloated appearance in 1986 was water retention from some medication. Again - no idea if that's true.
And him falling ill in 1984 makes sense, 7 years is a reasonable life expectancy for an HIV guy. Watch his interviews, read his quotes - maybe I'm reading into it too much but it seems that he knew something was up even if his doctor didn't at the time.

Good documentary that. Anyway, my impression is that he got it in 1984, had an inkling for a while (coupled with natural paranoia) and found out in '86 - hence his reasons for not wanting to tour no more.

I agree with Zebonka12. Although i haven't seen this documentry, it sounds pretty legit. And it would explain that statement before WWTLF. I always found that a bit odd.

A few years ago, I bought a book entitled: The Freddie Mercury Story, Living On The Edge written by author David Bret. In his book his states that Mercury found out the he found that he had AIDS in 1987. On page 145, Bret states "It is now known that Freddie had held back during his in-depth interview with David Wigg over his HIV test- the fact that only days before speaking to the journalist the results of this and a subsequent test had confirmed the worst. Not only was Freddie most definitely HIV positive, he quite likely had already developed full-blown AIDS."
For him to have developed AIDS though, he would've had it for several years beforehand.
And one of the tests they used to run was to see if the subject had a low white blood cell count, rather than actually looking for the virus itself. I suppose earlier tests could've had dud readings.

From what FM says before WWTLF during Knebworth86, he seems to know about what he says. He says the same during Wembley. He didn't want the world to know what he had.
Also you have to look at his song writing. "My Love is Dangerous", tells it all.
Freddie looks very worried during the Wembley show almost like he's wondering if he can make it.
Freddie and John once had an argument, Freddie said "This may be my last tour". Then John agreed to go.
At the time Freddie began to suspect he had Aids, he settled down with Jim Hutton because he didn't want to die alone. I think Freddie knew he had something but it wasn't showing up as positive. He just didn't tell Jim and Peter until 1987. This is when Freddie's face began to show the symptoms related to the disease.
Funny looking back though, How could we not know? I mean, look at the photos.
