Hey livingonmyown, I have a question for you.
There's been something that's been bugging me for a long time.
When I try to write my name, Richard Guilbault, in katakana, I come across an issue that I don't know how to solve.
How I would try to write it is based on the English pronounciation for my name, which in romanized Japanese phonetics would be written, for the first name, as either:
Riichaado or Riichaadu
I'm confused on the last part, the "do" or "du".
My question is, which character would I use for the last two letters of my name? Do I use "do" or "du"?
Personally, I like the pronounciation with "do", but I feel that it's not a true way to write it in Japanese. With "du", I have the exact opposite problem; I don't like the sound, but I think it is more proper in terms of spelling.
What would you suggest?
Also, I have a worse time trying to figure out my last name when I try to write it.
Phonetically, my last name, Guilbault, is literally pronounced as "gill-bowl", as in 'fish gills', and 'cereal bowl'. The "t" is silent in this pronounciation (there are other slightly different pronounciations, all of which annoy me when I hear them, so for me this one is the proper pronounciation. It is a French name, that's why).
How would I write Guilbault in katakana when I go by phonetics?
Would I write it as guiirubou? Or do I write it as giirubooto? (I'm indifferent to the "t" part)
You know more than I do, so that's why I'm asking you.
Your help and advice would be much greatly be appreciated!
