I think the whole "backwards" thing is a misunderstanding. John Reid said that Fred sometimes would think of something musical and play backwards, and that he (John) BELIEVED that some passages of Bo Rhap could have started that way. It doesn`t mean that Fred wrote songs that way. Those were just throwaway ideas imo, perhaps something he come up with that way ended up being used, but most of his songwriting would be actually sitting at the piano, or taking the guitar or whatever.
