Sum 41 have recorded a version of "Killer Queen" for a Queen tribute album currently being assembled by Hollywood Records.
The Canadian punks requested to tackle the lush pop nugget from Queen's 1974 Sheer Heart Attack album, but they were soon awed by its elaborate arrangement. "Once we started getting into it, we said, 'Why did we pick this song?'" frontman Deryck Whibley says, of the Los Angeles session. "We only had two days, which is funny because it probably took Queen about a week to record it. It's one of the hardest songs."
"There's so many layers of guitars, and the piano part changes every time," adds drummer Stevo Jocz. "But the drum part is easy."
As for the vocals, Sum knew better than to imitate Queen's operatic style. "I didn't try to sound like Freddie Mercury," Whibley says. "I sang my interpretation of the song."
Sum 41 kick off a U.S. tour with Unwritten Law April 12th in Buffalo.

BTW what would be your types if you were to choose artists and songs for the tribute album? I read somewhere here that Bowie should cover "I'm Going Slightly Mad". This could be fucking brilliant! And my tip is Velvet Revolver doing a cover of "Tie Your Mother Down" (one of Slash's favourite songs). What do you think?

I think Coheed and Cambria should do soemthing from Queen II...if there's anyone who needs to do a Queen tribute its them...I doubt HR would pay attention to them though...here's hoping
Sum 41... I don't know. They sound respectful to the track, so it's probably decent. As far as other covers go (for the tribute album), I think that The Darkness should cover Brighton Rock. First of all, it suits Justin Hawkin's voice (though his voice could be a helluva alot better if you ask me). And second, I refuse to listen to any comparisons between The Darkness and Queen until a cover of BR takes place. Why? If you know Queen, you know that there's hardly a comparison between the two bands... unless we're talkin' theatrics... That's a completely different story.
Oh! And third. Being that The Darkness have two guitars, they could put an interesting spin on the solo-- without even having to bother with the echo.

what is there to disappoint about a tribute album? - of course the songs can NEVER be as good as the original - but everytime someone covers a queen song - there's whinging, complaining, and all kinds of demands for the perpetraors to be burned at the stake as heretics and witches.
f-f-s people - lighten up - peopl who cover other bands stuff - are usually genuine fans - or they LIKE the song ! you don't get people covering songs they hate

Why never? Sometimes cover version can be even better than the original, e.g. "The Great Pretender".
I also ADORE!!!! Freddie's cover of Ricky Nelson's "Hello Mary Lou, Goodbye Heart". I think Freddie does it MUCH better, just Gorgeous!
You mean we're actually going to be a quality, ALL STAR tribute album instead of the no-name crap we've seen over the years?
