I don't necessarily like Sum41 but I do respect them as musicians, they seem to have a kind of no bullshit attitude approach, overall it could have been worse...
I am still routing for coheed and cambria, their singer listened to night at the opera every night as he went to sleep while they were recording their new album, he even mentioned Queen II as "must listen to material" on a fansite...and he references father to son on the hidden track (see my sig). any other co&ca fans out there on QZ?

BTW what would be your types if you were to choose artists and songs for the tribute album? I read somewhere here that Bowie should cover "I'm Going Slightly Mad". This could be fucking brilliant! And my tip is Velvet Revolver doing a cover of "Tie Your Mother Down" (one of Slash's favourite songs). What do you think?
david is usualy fabulous doing covers... have ever listened to his version of Paul Simon's "America"? awesome... but more prestigious acts will be doing covers for this album: Green Day, Metallica, Elton John and also rumoured to be part of the list. At last a good move from Hollywood Records. This album will be on store to "welcome" Queen+PR American tour next Fall!!!!
People just seem to criticise things like this becuase they seem to think it might make them a better fan. It's the same with Paul Rodgers...
Christ, he's just singing a few songs, be grateful. he's not trying to be Freddie, he's just being himself. Same I'm sure with this Tribute album. I for one would like to see The Darkness on there, I'd rather have them do something like Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy, something silly and light-hearted. I'm not afraid to say I like The Darkness. Or Electric Six. stick Radio Ga Ga on there, I think it - and they - are awesome. Phenomenal live. The Foo's should get their finger out and do some more Queen covers. Dave Grohl puts a good spin on the vocals for Tie Your Mother Down, and the Foo's used to do a cover of Now I'm Here in their shows in the late 90's. That was AWESOME.
I tell you what, I saw limpbizkit do a version of Hound Dog by Elvis, and that is possibly the greatest cover of that song I will ever see. Couldn't believe that they would be able to cover a more simple "rock n roll" song, but it just shows how single minded critics and non-likers can be. And I know for a fact that Fred Durst is an admirer of Queen. I for one would like to see them do a take of White Man. If any one has heard Underneath The Gun by limpbizkit you will no Fred Durst can sing rather than shout as everyone assumes. And John Otto is a phenomenal drummer, and I've got no doubts Wes Borland could put a darker slant on the guitar.
And as for a band who are MADE to do a Queen song - MUSE. I don't think there isn't a Queen song Muse could cover and not make it sound amazing. I'd like to say Bohemian Rhapsody, but I'd much rather see them do something fo Queen II, or another ANATO track.

I agree. For once, can't we all just look at something with an open mind and not criticize until we actually hear the final result?
And I also completely agree with a cover from Muse! I think they could handle a lot of different material, but for some reason, I can imagine them doing an amazing version of Love Of My Life.
I also ADORE!!!! Freddie's cover of Ricky Nelson's "Hello Mary Lou, Goodbye Heart". I think Freddie does it MUCH better, just Gorgeous!
the reason that covers can never better the original is nothing to do with personal taste or perception
it's down to design. the original is the way the song WAS intended to sound
a cover - no matter how great the artist and how fantastic the arrangement and performance - is nothing more than a great homage to the original
I'm just hoping that Blink 182 doesn't decide to record Bohemian Rhapsody at one point. I'm just shuddering at the sounds of their singer's voice singing "Mama... oooh ooohhh, didn't mean to make you cry...."
Sum 41 are poseur punks. They are fakes. The only good bands ever to come from Canada are Rush and Triumph. Worst Queen cover I heard was The Braids' version of Bohemian Rhapsody which was blasphemy. Speaking of bad covers, Scissor Sisters desecrated Comfortably Numb. Pink Floyd were honored(I think for extra royalties and what not) but fans found it sacrilege. Another bad cover was Brownstone(a female act whom were signed to king child lover Michael Jackson's label) turning The Eagles' I Can't Tell You Why into a whine fest. Lest we not forget Mariah's desecration of Def Leppard's Bringing On the Heartbreak(though the band were honored, I say they got some royalties out of it). If you do a cover make sure it kicks ass(like The Foo Fighters with Brian May's version of Have a Cigar or Metallica's Stone Cold Crazy).

Best cover of BoRap for me was Bad News as the rock section rocked. Doubt it would end up on a tribute album though. And yes, Brian did produce it.

Exactly, they don't exactly have to be musically brilliant, but as long as the artist just tries to be themselves, theres no point in doing a cover.

I may get shot down for this, but I personally think that the Five version of We Will Rock You was a very good version. They wanted to make a new version as such, but get Bri and Rog in for a bit of creditbility. And they aimed for a youthful market, and they got a youthful market. Job done.
Electric Six, in my opinion, did the perfect cover. They did it in exactly the Queen way... taking the piss. If Queen were ever to do something like that, that's how they would have done it. And the songs job? Get people rocking, and if you've seen the Six in concert, you'll know it does.
