The Golden Years

This is the truth :-

Queen I thru to NOTW were simply the best albums produced by a rock band ever.

They were original, exciting, well crafted and contained musicianship the like of which we are unlikely to see again in our lifetimes.

After that we got a fair crop of decent songs and Queen were still worthwhile but the golden years were over.

I don't think this is often put so bluntly but I do think Roger and Brian would agree.

Your opinion does not equal fact. But nice try anyway.

Totally disagree...if anything Queen reached their Pinnacle with Innuendo..as good if not better than ANATO. Innuendo showcased their depth as lyricists, their evolution, maturity, and growth as songwriters, conceptualists, musicians, artists...I also LOVE AKOM, The Works.

Everything they did was golden...

I personally like the 5 first albums the most. Queen changed style into mor popping and thats maybe the main reason why I don´t like the later stuff that much. I´t would have been great if queen would have made an album that would have sounded more like the seventies, sometime later in their career.

Changing their sound is what made them golden to me. I don't expect an artist to stay stuck in the same genre or sound for decade after decade.
Gee, even Bowie went from Glam, to philly blues/soul, to pop.

Most artists who are true ARTISTS...want to evolve, grow, spread their musical wings so to speak. I like their music as much from 1991, as 1973, as much as 1986 as 1975. It's all good, just different stages and chapters of their growth as music artisans.

I like that Queen experimented with and were interested in different forms of music. A few times they didn't quite nail it like Hot Space...hey but then there are tons of musical genres..MANY of which they tried..and only disco was just so so for them. And even parts of Hot Space I like, even if it's not ART.

But Innuendo...evrything on it is a masterpiece. The Game 9whic has rockabilly w/ CLTCL), AKOM and The Works are pop..but at its most sparkling and gorgeous...so who cares. It's all GREAT to me. Queen are consummate artists and if Freddie had lived, who knows what other treaures they would have brought us.

I agree completely. Queen were great because they were fabulous in the 70s AND in the 80s.

I know they were great at times in the late 70s and 80s but these were not the "Golden Years".

I would say 40% excellence in this period as opposed to 95% on the first 5 albums.

One exception :-
On Innuendo they may have crept back up to 70% ;-)

But think of the songs from the 80's EVEN that are NOT on Innuendo..that are masterworks of songwriting and invention.

Save Me, AKOM, Who Wants To Live Forever, One Vision, Is This The World We Created, CLTCL, Las Palabras De Amor...ALL Gems right up there with the best of the 70's stuff.

OK - so my advice is to buy all the albums up to NOTW, Innuendo and the Platinum Collection. I reckon that would be a good enough collection for most people.

I liked the fact they would change their musi, but bloody hell the first time I listened to The Game took me by surprise.

Dust Biter - you carry on loving it, nothing wrong with that - I just question whether it can be regarded as a masterpiece and, in my opinion only, it isn't.

Well if a person were objective, and looked at Hot Space not necessarily as if they liked the music, but from a perspective that, yes, artistically speaking..it was a HUGE artistic and creative stretch for Queen...evolving and spreading their wings...charting NEW music genres and experimenting beyond their fan bases' expectations..yes..it IS groundbreaking. Just because some of us do not like the sound of it, or it didn't work out, does NOT take away the FACT that Queen tried a VERY challenging, NEW way to express themselves creatively and din't want to stay stuck in a rut of the same old same old...genre of music or what fans and record executives expected and wanted from them. For that Queen has my UTMOST respect.
