Don't kid yourself. Nowadays the NUMBER 1 moneymaker of a tour for an artist...is the merchandising. Every time a fan buys a t shirt, poster, whatever...all of Queen hears the cash register go Ca Ching!

Know aht it is...I've read through the years in music...that SONGWRITERS who own their own publishing rights...even if they don't even sing their own songs...make more money than from singing, touring, or recording. In the music industry, the money is in music songwriting/publishing...and with Queen they had 4 members who all were great songwriters...who all had hits, and who EVERYONE that covers or licenses a Queen song...then has to PAY a Licensing Fee and Royalties to whichever member WROTE the song.

So Every member of Queen, including Freddie Mercury's estate, will make money...forever, because people, other music artists, movies, TV, commercials, sports teams, whatever pay Licensing fees and pay royalties, and EVERY record that is sold, the songwroters/members get royalties of course as well.

Actually Brian did say that The Magic Tour was the only tour they made a profit on, because they always poured any money back into the show.

In my opinion anybody that makes money, honestly (ie not through criminal activities).......deserves every freakin cent of it, whatever they make......and certainly those fine lads that call themselves Queen did......:)

Is this true? I thought that the rights to artistic output became "free" about 50 years after the artist dies? Or something like that. For instance, Beethoven's music is "free" and anyone can record the music without having to pay a royalty to anyone? (The anyone being whoever would have held the rights otherwise - i.e. decendants etc)

Beethoven's music was not copyrighted.

I still think there's a time at which the copyright or whatever runs out and the songs are "open" without royalties being due

It is 50 years, although it varies between countries - can be more, can be less.
Anyhow Freddie stated it will be 50 years in his last will, and it is just 14 years he is not here.
He still earns money from royalities, but it is shared between Mary (50%), his parents (25%) and his sister (25%). If his mother dies, her 25% will be moved to Freddie's sister. And if his sister dies, to her children.
