RIEN!! & QZ QuestionsMajor/In Depth Freddie Interview on Mercury Paradise

I listened to the entire 90 some minute Interview with Freddie from 1984 on Mercuryparadise.com and I have to say that at least 60% of the many questions not only myself, but many of you on QZ bring up about Freddie..he answers himself in extraordinary great detail and depth.

It's to date the best interview I have ever heard Freddie do and is absolutely wonderful. Did my heart good to hear Freddie himself, discuss so openly and warmly such an immense amount of information offering insight into his life, thoughts, viewpoints, artistry, and work.

I was frankly...very surprised that Freddie spent such an immense amount of time answering questions that covered a VAST range including artistic/creative stuff, songwriting, Fred's songwriting process, "The Works" album and the various songs on it from Radio Ga Ga to Is This The World We Created, touring, performing, Freddie's flambouyance, the music industry, the music business, merchandising, tour corporate sponsors, Queen's changing music styles, the public's rejection of "Hot Space", Fred's friendships/professional collaborations and/or creative views of Michael Jackson, Boy George, Elton John..

...Freddie's professional and personal relationships and especially songwriting work with Brian, Roger, John...

...their work with Mack producing both Queen and Fred's at that time upcoming solo record..and the production process in general..

....the UPCOMING at that time, yes...planned gig that had not yet happened at Sun City and the potential repercussions of that which are posed to him...PRIOR to Queen playing there (the questions are about Queen planning to play there and are Queen a political band or a band that does not take political stances, and their playing in various countries worldwide, are they concerned about potential repercussions),

..Queen playing Argentina about the time the Falklands War erupted,..

... Freddie's solo record, the IWTBF video regarding both the band dressing in drag and Freddie's work (PAST and at that time PRESENT)with The Royal Ballet to recreate the Nyjinsky/Debussy originated ballet sequence...

...Freddie potentially someday wanting to do...acting, writing film scores, writing stage theater musicals, collaborating with other artists (all which I have asked about)...

...why Queen preferred to record in Munich...OVER Montreux,...

....(sound familiar..I have asked about most of this as so have alot of people on QZ),..

..Freddie's childhood, his relationship with his parents & their viewpoints about his going into music as a career, and on and on.

Freddie is amazingly open, candid, gives VERY informative, in depth straightforward answers.

Anyways...people new or otherwise to QZ, please listen to this interview with Freddie. He answers and discusses loads of topics we all discuss on QZ and he is very at ease, open, honest, charming and insightful throughout this incredible interview, which...is 6 parts long.

I have some questions about this interview though for RIEN...If you are out there.

Is this interviews available on a CD/DVD?

WHO conducted the interview and for what media...(ie: TV show, radio show, whatever)?

How can I contact you Rien as there is no contact I could find on your website?

Based on what you said, I think that is a Mary Turner interview. As you may know, Turner had a program called Off the Record with Mary Turner on Westwood One radio. I don't know if this particular interview was ever broadcast, since most of the other Off the Records were a slightly different format. This interview sounds more like an unedited feed than a broadcast.

Of course, this assumes we are talking about the same interview.

This sounds very interesting. I will have to download this when I get home. Anybody else have any of the Off The Record interviews? Or the 1989 interview with all four band members?

I have NEVER heard of Mary Turner, but this is unedited because you hear her say she has to flip over the tape in the tape recorder, she asks Freddie at the beginning of the interview to please speak directly into the mike as it's not picking up his voice loud enough,...

...you hear Freddie yell PHOEBE...MORE WINE!!! (this is hilarious BTW)

She talks about interviewing him in the past too.

What surprised me most was,

1) That Freddie would comfortably open up and give such a long, honest in depth "hard ball" (not just fluff answers but heavy handed issues), interview that damn near covered everything but his birth..knowing his well founded concerns with how the press usually mistreated him.

2) That this woman interviewer asked such intelligent, reverent, in depth, well researched questions, without any trace of usual press sarcasm, snobbery, snideness. She asked thought provoking questions that were to the point...that then thus Freddie was eager and happy to open up in great length to.

I used to listen all the time to "Westwood One's" syndicated shows but I have never heard of "Off The Record" and Mary Turner.

Can anyone tell me a bit about this radio program, who Mary Turner is?...

There is also an interview with Queen that is gives less info about that Mary Turner/Westwood One also did.

Not that I know of. I can't remember ever seeing this interview transcribed.

Mary Turner hosted a show called Off The Record at least until 1991. Sometime in the 1990s, the host changed (Uncle somebody, used to have his site bookmarked). Off The Record featured programs on Hot Space, AKOM, and Innuendo, plus individual interviews with band members.

You can consult that for info on airdates and programs. Who is Mary Turner? Other than she was a disc jockey, I have no clue. I've tried to find out more about her, but have been unsuccessful.

Can you purchase this CD? Maybe, but it will take some luck. In my experience, these radio shows do circulate on CD (though in 1984 it was probably on LP), but it takes some looking about. This is certainly not something you'd find on Amazon, if that's what you mean. You have to try Record Shops and possibly Ebay.

Being on vinyl makes perfect sense for the era. Finding a real copy of it, though, will be difficult.
