Well, for everyone that is laying an egg that Brian performed with Beyonce & Britney for the Pepsi Ads...
In the interview I listened today to with Freddie from 1984, the interviewer specifically asks Freddie waht he thinks about big corporate sponsors sponsoring music artists on tour (like when you hear nowadays "Best Buy sponsors The Rolling Stones USA Tour), as well as music artists doing ads/commercials (Freddie actually brings up the Michael Jackson Pepsi ad back then in the 80's)...
..Freddie said he was 100% all for it. Reason, and he is honest and that's fine with me, is that yes, the music artist makes TONS of money that way, especially on corporate sponsored tours and with merchandising, which absorbs any expenses that have to be laid out for tours and accounts for the majority of revenue return.
Now before you all yell SELL OUT. I used to feel that way myself. Let me tell you, I can run a 10,000 page thread on QZ listing literally gazillions of famous starving artists from music, to painting, to actors, etc. I used to be on a soapbox. But get real. As long as the artists' WORK that you pay to see does their job in entertaining you and making YOU happy, it's not really your business to say they should or should not work with a corporate sponsor or do commercials.
To me they only "Sell Out" if the quality of their work denigrates/sucks. But to me...if the work is still great and has integrity, then the artist and in this case Freddie...could very happily laugh all the way to the bank.
Remember too, in the case of most successful artists, that in the beginning, they all struggle, are poor, and some live literally hand to mouth in their cars and on the streets.
Queen, unlike alot of music artists, didn't bum off their families while they were hoping to hit it big. They all got college educations which they worked hard at odd day jobs to put themselves through school.
Damn if I was Freddie..or Brian or John or Roger, I would love to live large in a mansion with fancy clothes, cars, and yachts and they ALL worked damn hard, touring and living on the road, never seeing their families, and living out of hotels and airplanes city to city.
They may be rich as kings now, but Queen are the exception. Most everyday musicians and artists work their lives and asses off living on the street on government cheese.
Freddie is quite candid in saying this...and I do NOT begrudge him. Why not. He earned it. You love his music still today right? That's all that matters.

Ah crap.
Ah crap.
That's the way the ball bounces. Live with it.
Would you rather Queen be like Vincent Van Gough who died penniless and starving, then 100 years AFTER he died his paintings sell for millions. Hell of alot of good it did him then.
Or the poor 2 frontmen of Badfinger who were so overwhelmed with debts and legal entanglements...
...(remember Queen had to endure this TOO! in their early days with bad managers who robbed them blind)...
... that the 2 frontmen of Badfinger committed suicide?
Oh I see how it is.
It's only cool if Freddie thinks so but if Glen Frey came out for corporate sponsorship you would be all over him like white on rice.
tsk. tsk. ;)

What do you get when you cross Lisa Goodrich with Chad Hanging?

Exactly Mike.
I love the way Lester only said 2 words, which didn't even really mean anything as far as I can tell, and he got a 100 word response.

I don't care if Glenn Frey has corporate sponsorship. When I called The Eagles a corporate rock band on the other topic in Serious discussion, I meant that during the 1970's, here in the USA, alot of bands such as Journey (who I like), Boston (who I like), The Eagles, Chicago, REO Speedwagon, Styx...were churning out top 40 hits strictly to appease their record labels and did NOT care if they made music that pleased themselves or their fans, but only set out to appease and please their Management and record labels..
..and that was also the era when USA stadium bands began doing record/album covers that never featured photos of the actual band/artist..but instead some irrelevant illustration and also a logo of the band only (as if the logo meant the artist was a manufactured Brand Name, or a "corporation" so to speak as metaphor)...as if the band itself was a useless, manufactured commodity.
The term here in the USA "corporate rock" means and refers to THIS Only,...
... having nothing to do with the issue of an artist or band partnering with a corporate sonsor or doing commercials.

Hit that nail on the head.
Arlene, you seem to be a wealth of information...posting topics left right and center. Was just wondering how old you are...purely out of interest.

Here we go again. Some of you on QZ amaze me.
If anyone says nothing but PERFECT/Saintly things about Freddie or Queen, we are stepford/syncophants, but say a little something about Freddie or Queen that IS objective and not Saintly, then the person saying it is hit with bitchy comments from you.
Some of you even say I NEVER say ANYTHING about Freddie that doesn't make him out to be a saint. Well actually, I agree with his take on corporate sponsorship...and I don't see where he says anything wrong...you just may not agree with it, but that doesn't make it wrong..
..and to me, it's fine as long as like I said it does NOT lower or conflict with the level of an artist's quality and integrity of their music.
But, if you don't agree with what I said, give rational reasons...don't just post some neanderthal bitchy comment because you don't agree or don't have the intelligence for a good debate.
BTW, Freddie was entitled to his opinions, JUST like we at QZ are. What cuz now you hear some issues he discussed, personally from him, instead of some journalist writing it in a publication so you all could say...well Freddie would NEVER say that!!, it's just the evil press making conjectured stories up...
...but cuz Freddie said it...you can't accept the truth?
Geez the decent man only said he approved of commercials and corporate sponsorship....not Nazi Germany!
You..as Freddie would say, take things damn too seriously..WHEN..it SUITS YOUR way of thinking...even when it's Freddie saying it. He's allowed to have a great business and marketing strategy/approach.
Again, Freddie and Queen were poor, worked very hard at odd jobs living in crappy flats, to put themselves through college, suffered through a hideous first manager who robbed them blind and ripped off all their money.
Freddie even discusses, if you would listen to the entire interview, how upsetting it is to him, to see and know that there are tons of talented people...who NEVER are recognized, or achieve any suuccess. That show business and the music industry are businesses like anything else. And an artist must as he says "work their asses off" to get noticed, recognized, KEEP their records selling.
Even Freddie says that if Queen's records ever started to stop selling in a continuous downward trend (not just one record as he was referring to "Hot Space",) but several records in a row and if Queen were to lose respect and sales and started to not sell out places like Madison Square Gardens, which he also refers too, that HE (Freddie) would end Queen, while they (Queen were still on top with respect), and he would do something else and explore other things/projects in entertainment.
Some of you on QZ can be such hypocrites, especially when referring to
Me, my topics on Freddie, and even Freddie himself...if it doesn't "Suit" your expectations.

I don't answer sarcastic remarks.
I think you completely missed the point. Personally, I too agree that when a musician records a song, that musician is able to use that song as they wish, and corporate sponsorship is okay.
But we're not complaining about that. What we're complaining about is the onslaught of posts you seem to make whenever the slightest idea crosses your mind. Yes I know, first amendment rights and all that, which I agree with, but you really have to draw the line somewhere. What discussion were you really hoping to create with this?
You do have a lot of good ideas, I'll give you that, but you post so frequently that it just becomes a bore. You also have a habit of not cutting to the chase of things, and just adding on to whatever you post. As someone said above, I posted two words and got a 100-word response. Your responses can also be abrasive from time to time; it's better to think about what you're going to post (and this goes for everyone, not just you specifically) and ask yourself, "Is this going to, in any way, make a contribution to the thread/messageboard or not?" I even ask myself that sometimes, and I show considerable restraint in what I post, but there are times when it just becomes too much and I have to post.

I don't see you ragging on several QZ Topic posters who create half a dozen posts a day about band wars, favorite songs/records/bands over and over and over, and the same topics that have been discussed 20 times already.
You also have a habit of saying 2 or 3 words..
Ah crap],
that are usually just bitchy remarks and offer nothing. Less is not more when it's intentionally meant as an attack.

Cause that is more entertaining than someone going on forever about a certain subject?
What a hypocrite you are Hero. I used to like you. You posted on the Topic that Queenzone was Fuc**d Up, that you didn't like that people were posting mean, bitchy remarks and how mad it made you and you "were leaving". Then you join in line with the nasty bitchy posters. More like a poseur.
Arlene,
You didn't seem to notice my ;)
And I'm not suprised you came back at me with a long-winded answer as opposed to going HAHA.
And that is why I think people fuck with you.
You seem a bit uptight.
Don't get me wrong. I enjoy your contributions to this board but it wouldn't hurt for you to lighten up a bit and not take people jesting you so seriously.
