He may not do many solos, but when Roger plays, my god does he play! It's a wonder the drumsticks don't snap! That twirly thing he does is also tricky (for all you cack-handed people like myself), nearly lost an eye!

Roger's drumming on "Queen" is great, and especially the great king rat drum solo....
Roger is a very good drummer , but I would not say his solo's are very difficult. They sound nice, but it's not that difficult everyone thinks. (I'm a drummer myself) . Take perhaps the drumsolo / timpani solo on the WWRY dvd, it sounds very nice with the roto toms. I think Roger is a better "play along with the song" drummer. He is a very musical drummer. For me he is the greatest rock drummer. The solo for KYA on Queen I is really too simple. I like his solo in Dragon attack and the way he ends Tie your mother down with all those fills.
White Queen - now THERE is a stretching of Roger's muscles! Such simple fills, yet so brilliant to hear. Perfect.
But, I think this is what you were getting at - just because isn't hard to do, doesn't make it less good? Like a friend of mine raves about how fast the Slipknot guitarist is and how hard it is to play, but so what? Doesn't make it a better solo than Killer Queen just because that was slow? But Roger's drumming is quality, it's what you wanna hear, and he makes a song out of it almost, which - as a drummer too - is something intresting to hear, see and learn from.

Roger's memory of not doing drum solos are distorted, Brian May stated on The Bohemian Rhapsody extra on Greatest Video Hits 1 DVD that Roger did tympani drum solos during Queen's most self-indulgent period and then Brian said "I should talk as I used to do 20 minute guitar solos". Roger did drum solos on the Jazz tour with the tympani drum solos on Brighton Rock. Then he duplicated the feat on the 1980/81 tours with Keep Yourself Alive where his drum solo would then end as Brian began his doubled delayed guitar doodle which served as overture to Roger's tympani solo which kicked ass on the We Will Rock You Montreal 1981 DVD.
I just love those solo's there ! I like the sound of the tympani.. And also the drum solo.. i think it was the first time I saw a drum solo by Roger..
He said on Live At Wembley DVD disc 2 somwhere that he didn't like drum solos.
Maby he liked it better earlyer.. At least all the drum solos you've been talked about are from early queen :P or most of them at least...
Keep Yourself Alive is probably his best ever drum solo. I also like the drum and vocal duet in Don't Stop Me Now.
